(Photo: Rosemary Alle- Creative writing draws students by Rosemary Allen Every Thursday, since the beginning of the Fall Term at Portland State U niversity, in room 358 \e uberger, the hours from 1:00 to 3:00 have been packed with untold, un known, and unheard talents. Creative U ritin g in the Black Experience is the name of the class; Professor James Rogers is the man directing the talent. He is directing this t..e n t towards the form a tion of a Northwest Black . . . Society, with input from the „ n tin g class into the "S Worship D ivision. Charles Tatum, a local Black a rtis t active with the Albina A rt Center, spoke at a recent session of the Black W rite rs Workshop. In ex plaining his motives to the class, behind expressing him self through sculpturing, he also explained many reasons fo r the need of a Northwest A rts Society. “ We came from a people,’* states M r. Tatum, “ whom have always participated in a shared cul ture, parcelling out duties, t a l e n t s , re sp o n sib ilitie s." M r . Tatum goes ontoe.xpress some of the sentiments of the class: “ . . . we cando fo r each other, we must relate one to another and to our community, as a rtists and individuals.” Organizations have ieen formed in the past, they are sure to be formed in the future; however, now is the time that Black w rite rs, sculptures, painters, poets, etc., no longer fear white- c ritic is m and non-support. Now is the time that Black a rtists relate to themselves, to th e ir people and those who would attempt to understand. And now is the time that Northwest Black Arts society is being formalized to serve as a launching pad fo r all ol the smoldering talent that is bursting through, in F’ rofessoi Rogers' class, in a smal room inNeuberger Hall.
