Davis, acting D ire cto r of Black Studies at Portland State U niversity, recently a n n o u n c e d that Michael H ill, le ctu re r in Black Studies, left last week to study and travel in A frica . M r. H ill received a fellow ship from the A frica n - American Institute. H ill left New York July 3 and w ill re turn to the United States August 11. HUI w ill travel and study m East A frican and v is it several East A frican countries. M r. Davis stated that the Black Studies Center and PSL were glad to know that one of th e ir faculty members was awarded the fellowship. The •T- D ire cto r d e c l a r e d , “ M r. H ill’ s travel and study in East A frica wUl greatly enhance our Black Studies Program .” M r. H ill is the second Black American from the Black Studies Center at PSD to study in A fric a . M r.D a vis, the D ire c to r, studied and traveled in West A fric a in 1^69. While HUl's area is Black American oriented, V r . Daves’ is A frican oriented. Davis has done extensive -e- search and w ritin g on African H istory, including several book reviews which have teen published in A fric a . Teachers learn science The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry had the young people interested in science, Portland State Uni ve rsity had the teachers in terested in teaching science to young people, and that’ s how a course called Educa tion 509 got under wayatPSU. The course, also know as "P ra cticu m : Science and C hildren,” is a summer term program at Portland State. There are 24 elementary teachers in the class which la taught by Bruce A. Kaiser, assistant professor of educa tion. The class was held fo r the fir s t tim e last year, i t is designed to give the teachers attending summer school some new insights into the teaching of science subjects ranging from animal behavior to astronomy, the use of microscopes, the making of blueprints and the printing of film . Last F rid a y (July 7) the teacher-students at Portland State and the young people enrolled at OMS1 met fo r an a ll— day "p o tp o u rri” at the OMSl-Zoo complex. About two years ago today, 1 was thinking very hard about why I had to suffer on the little money welfare gave me and let my little son suf fe r too, because he couldn't have some of those nice things other kids had and this really hurt me as a young Black mother. So 1 called welfare up one day and asked them to re fe r me to a agency fo r help. Yes, there are times when we all feel to proud to ask fo r help.
