Scientology, an eclectic re ligion founded by American philosopher L . Ron Hubbatd, began in 1950 with the publica tion of M r. Hubbard’ s book, "D ianetics: The Modem Sci ence of Mental Health." Dia netics, now a sub-study of Sci entology, provided a theory of the workings of the mind and a counseling technique based upon the alleviation of stored mental image pictures of mo ments of pain and uncon sciousness which could ad versely affect the individual years la te r. Dianetics won in stant popularity and the book became an overnight best seller. Continuing with his re search, M r. Hubbatd found that there was a higher force than the human mind which governed the workings of h o m o sapians: the s p irit (called Theun in Scientology). In 1952 Scientology was foun ded in coordination with Hub bard’ s newly developed tech niques of Spiritual counseling. Today, Scientology has over 43 churches and 170 missions throughout the world and e s ti mates its membership at 5 m illio n , with major congre gations in the U 5 „ England, and South A frica .
