It is now produc ing about 500 plaster units a day, and operating very suc cessfully according to M r. Clayton. As manager of plant opera tions, he supervises the work of 19 people who cast the statues, finish, paint and dry them, then pack them fo r shipping. A ll of the employees received on-the- job training at the plant. Naturally, there are many problems involved in such an operation, but M r. Clayton has overcome most of them. Most of the people employed at the plant where either skilled o r low skilled before going to work at BJD. Many had poor habits of work attendance, and had never held one job for a long period of tim e. "Manufacturing is a new ex perience fo r most of our work e rs ," M r. Clayton said. " I t ’s hard work, but they find it's very satisfying to see something they produced with their own hands. We have a rapport here that is beautiful." The Pennsylvania Department of Community A ffairs granted to help get the plant started, and to cover operations while 42 people are trained. At the end of that period, some tim e in 1 9 7 1 , it Is intended that the plant w ill be a self-supporting non-profit establishment, and those who received the training w ill continue to work as per manent employees. M r. Clayton says he enjoys the opportunity he has had to help establish the plant. "The job allows me to interact with people from the top to the bot tom of the spectrum ," he said.
