(Continued from page 3)
opment Corp, plant was opened
under M r. Clayton's direction at
7 800 Susquehanna Street in
Pittsburgh's Homewood section
in December. It is now produc
ing about 500 plaster units a
day, and operating very suc
cessfully
according
to M r.
Clayton.
As manager of plant opera
tions, he supervises the work of
19 people who cast the statues,
finish, paint and dry them, then
pack them fo r shipping. A ll of
the employees received on-the-
job training at the plant.
Naturally, there are many
problems involved in such an
operation, but M r. Clayton has
overcome most of them. Most of
the people employed at the plant
where either skilled o r low
skilled before going to work at
BJD. Many had poor habits of
work attendance, and had never
held one job for a long period
of tim e.
"Manufacturing is a new ex
perience fo r most of our work
e rs ," M r. Clayton said. " I t ’s
hard work, but they find it's
very satisfying to see something
they produced with their own
hands. We have a rapport here
that is beautiful."
The Pennsylvania Department
of Community A ffairs granted to
help get the plant started, and
to cover operations while 42
people are trained. At the end
of that period, some tim e in
1 9 7 1 , it Is intended that the
plant w ill be a self-supporting
non-profit establishment, and
those who received the training
w ill continue to work as per
manent employees.
M r. Clayton says he enjoys
the opportunity he has had to
help establish the plant. "The
job allows me to interact with
people from the top to the bot
tom of the spectrum ," he said.
" I t requires creativity, imagi
nation and resourcefulness."
