Federal Appropriation Pro ' vides $1,100,000. OFFICIALS GATHER DATA The Quality Store of Portland 22 OREll 10 RECE1V 1 ROAD ' ESTABLISHED jjlBCT ' ) t State Commissions Will Open Bids Today on Improvements ha Five Oregon Counties. Oregon will receive approximately $1,100,000 for the building and repair or roads under the 15,000,004 federal appropriation, according to K. A. Sherman, associate forester of the United States, who met here yester day with federal road officials and the state highway commission. Mr. Sherman, with T.. W. Nor crosse, chief engineer of the forest service, was here to gather data on roads available for federal aid. It seems almost certain that that sec tion of The Dalles-California high way from the northern boundary of Klamath county to Fort Klamath, and the spur to Crater lake, known as the Anna Creek road,, will receive federal aid. Plea Made for Fonda. R. A. Booth, chairman of the state highway commission, made a plea lor federal officials to recommend the appropriation of funds for the de velopment of the Crater lake road. This year the 22-mlle section of the road frifci Trail to Prospect will re ceive $300,000, half of which will be donated by the government and half by the state. Mr. Booth asked that the forest service go farther and ask for an equal appropriation for 1923. Mr. Sherman declared that the ap propriation was made for the develop ment of forest roads and that the Crater lake highway did not strictly come under this classfication. He said, however, that he would con sider the proposition if conditions next year permit. ' Bids to Be Opened Today. " The forest service men at this time have no power to make decisions on what roads the service will improve cr build in the state. They are simply gathering information. The state highway commission will meet this morning and bids for road improvement in five Oregon counties w ill be opened. The bids will be on the following projects: Douglas county Myrtle Creek-Canyon-villo section. Pacific highway, 10.5 miles of paving, and Camas valley Bection, Rose-burg-Coos bay highway, 8.5 miles of grad ing, 120,000 cubic yards of excavation. Gilliam county Rock creek-Shutler sec tion, John Iay river highway, 9.5 miles of grading and rock surfacing, 73,000 cubic yards of excavation. Hood River county Hood River-Booth Hiil section, 6.1 miles of grading, 173,500 cubic yards of excavation, and Booth Hill Forest boundary section. Mount Hood loop highway, 12 miles of'grading, 05,000 cubic yards of excavation. Malheur county Jamieson-Brogan sec tion, John Bay river highway, 6.2 miles of gravel surfacing. Union, county City of Union section, old Oregon trail, 1.2 miles of paving, 20,000 square yards. EASTERN AND POUTLAND . TYPES AT ISSUE. Commissioners " Take Under Ad visement Selection of Lifts for New County Hospital. Selection of elevators for the new Multnomah county hospital on Mar quam hill has not yet been made by the county commissioners, the mat ter being taken under advisement yesterday again after listening to ar guments by representatives of the Portland Elevator company and the Otis Elevator company of Chicago. . Satton & Whitney, hospital archi tects, recently recommended the east ern elevator, but the commissioners have not yet decided to award the contract in line with the recommenda tion, its soundness being questioned by the local manufacturer. Letters were read to the commission from the state library at Salem, Mercy liuspital at Eugene and many other places where Portland elevators had been installed, giving testimony to their satisfactory operation. The representative of the company said that the actual fulfillment of specifi cations was a minor question to a company which manufactured eleva tors of several types. The -bids were very close, with the eastern company a shade below that of the local concern. , FINE NUMBERS OFFERED Kcinald Wcrrenrath AVHI Present Quality Programme Here.
