In cars, were re ported by the Merchants Exchange as follows: Wheat Barter Flour Oats Hay roniua Increased Demand for Cheaper Leather and Shoes Should Stim ulate Buying: of Old Hides. The hide market continues quiet, but the undertone ts fairly steady. There Is only a moderate movement here and local deal ers are holding to their old prices. In the east there has been an active business In packer hides, and while country hides have been by no means excited, the fact that packers' stock is being cleaned up is en couraglng as it may soon open the way for a broader trade In country hides. It is also interesting to note that the call now is for cheaper leather and cheaper shoes, which should stimulate business In the poorer class of hides, which have been a drag on the market for so long. The stock of these has also been reduced by large exports to Germany. Of the enlarged dealings In the packer hide market, trade advices from the east say: "Continued strength prevails In do mestic packer hides, and other varieties are a I no firm to higher, but at further In creases there is less snap to trading. Packer hides sold freely throughout all of last week, with aggregate sales totaling around 120,04)0, exclusive of some good-sized book ings by two "Big 3" packers as well. Heavy native hides scored an additional c. Increase, with sales of heavy native steers up to 15Uc and heavy natlce cows at 14c. While there la a brisk inquiry from large buyers for all varieties of branded hides st last trading rates, they are in disposed to pay a further MjC Increase de manded by all packers. The statistical position of the market, however, Is very satisfactory from sellers' standpoint. Up steers up to 15 He and heavy native cows agoinitt 1-MrC last paid, but holders have been unabJe, thus far, to effect business at the full asking basis of 13c." In the forepart of the week, says the same report, considerable activity ruled in country hides, with some slsable lines of back salting buffs sold at from So to 7c Choice quality, good section, fresh buffs are hold at He to 84c, with bids of 7Wc declined for Ohios. Extremes are wsnted In best quality, but at some of the highest rates talked, 11 4c to 12c, tanners hold back, entertaining Ideas of around 11c. Cider lots bring proportionately less. Dun' Review to morrow will aav: Response to the constructive force ht the economic situation doe not come oulcklv. but evidence -of a revival multi ply. The recovery would be more rapid if fewer restraints were present, yet the gain Is fairly steady and there 1 promise of Its continuance. A further lowering of money rates thl week, reflecting the strengthened banking position. Is an encouraging factor and a lessening of price unaettlement make for more confident operation In different quarters. While all ststlstlcsl barometer do not reveal the Improvement in business, rec ords of production in several basic Indus trie are distinctly better, and a larger employment of manufacturing capacity tends to reduce the volume of Idle labor. The latter is still of such proportions as to exert a potent Influence on the public purchasing power, but retail distribution is somewhat stimulated as winter ap proaches and offerings of goods at prices satisfactory to consumers are being ab sorbed with considerable freedom. Money rates were higher than at any time since the civil war and bond prices correspondingly low. Those of our customers who have followed this advice and purchased high-grade bonds have been able to realize large returns on their investment, together with marked increase of their principal. The following is list of a few of the important issues which we have sold to Oregon investors during the last twelve months, showing the prices at which they were issued and their present market quotations: issue present Security ' price market Northern Pacific-Great Northern Joint 6 V2i ....... . 96'2 1 05 Great Northern Railroad 7 96J2 106$ Swiss Government 8s. . 100 108 Standard Oil of California 7s 1 00 105'2 Standard Oil "of New York 7s 1 00 1 06 Bell Telephone Company of Pennsylvania 7s. ...... 95 J2 107 Canadian Northern Railway 6J2 96'2 102 Chile Government 8s. 99 100 E. Upturns in. the price of wheat took place today, helped by victory note at pax and by predictions of frost In Argentina Closing quotations of wheat, although unsettled, were 114 c to 2fec net higher, with December $1.01 to ll.ultt and May li.06 to $l.tKS. Cora gained c to lVc and oats Ho to c to K c Provisions finished unchanged to XOc higher. At first the wheat market showed a downward tendency, the result of an ac cumulation of overnight orders to sell. The fact, however, that values had broken 11 cents a bushel within a week caused a reaction to be looked for in many quar ters, and the question was raised whether any considerable part of the United States exportable surplus remained to be dis posed of, estimates being current that 2O.U00.O0O to 50,000,000 bushels sold to the seaboard were yet to be shipped. Par for victory notes gave the wheat market a decided stimulus at this Juncture. Dis patches saying the Argentine wheat crop was at a critical stage and that frost was looked for tonight counted also In favor of the bulla On the other hand, gossip about disturbed foreign financial condi tions appeared to be acting a more or less of a check on the advance. Corn and oats rolled with wheat. Rural offerings of corn were light. More atten tion was given to the movement fostered by bankers and government officials to aid farmers in holding corn for better prices. Provisions reflected the firmness of bog value The Chicago grain letter, received yee- ! terday by the Overbck A Cooka company of Portland, follows: ( Wheat Sentiment was Intensely bearish I last night but underwent a material I change after the opening this morning, wnen the market showed evidence of hav ing been thoroughly liquidated. The tone of the day's news was also more cheerful ,nd especially aa to the cash situation. All Interior markets reported a better milling demand at firmer premiums. Even In Canada, from whence our most depres sing news has been coming lately, the reeling: was less panicky, with cash de mand better and less wheat pressing on the market. About 600.000 bushel of Manitoba wheat wm worked for export on the break and at the close It was re ported three cargoes) of Pacific coast wheat and two cargoes of Australian wheat had been taken by India. The Im portance of the Argentine crop situation and the realisation tnat cne crop is not yet made was brought to the attention of the trade when today for the first time this season a report was received which was not altogether favonabVe. Corn There was very little pressure on this market at any time during the ses sion and prices advanced easily to a pre mium of lc to ie over last nunri closing. Cash corn was again in good demand at a small advance in premiums. The details of the proposed plan of the war finance corporation to store corn and hold It off the market will be of vita: interest to the trade. Should the plan be put In force soon enough It might easily relieve the market of the initial pressure of new corn. Oats Renewed liquidation In the nearby delivery caused some weakness early, but offerings were well taken and th under tone at the close was strong. Provisions Rather strong on light of ferings and scattered support. ' Leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open. Hirh. Low. $ .93 $ 1.01 9 .98 CORN. .46 '4 .44 .51 .50 OATS. There were fur ther reductions In the market for coffee futures today. The demand for December contracts appears to have subsided since the price sold up to 8.75c on Wednesday, and a disposition to take profits on long contracts in later deliveries during today s trading was probably Increased by the easier ruling of Brazil. The opening was 3 to 24 points lower and after some early irregularity, the market sold about 18 to 8c- points below last night s closing figures during the afternoon, with December sell ing at B.47c, and March at 8.10c Decem ber closed a lew points up irom ine lowest, but there was no rally on the later de liveries, with the general list closing at a net decline f 10 to so pomta sales were estimated at about 90.0O0 bars.
