The tone of the hide market throughout the country continues to improve, which is regarded as a good indication that raw materials generally, after reaching mini mum values, must necessarily do better. No changes have been, made in local quo- tations. nor are country hides materially aigher In any of the eastern markets, but packer hides have a strong tendency and calf skins also show more activity and strength. Country hides, however, are receiving more attention in the east and numerous ales are reported In trade advices of choice middle west free of grub extremes, 23 to 45 pounds, at from 100 to 11c, and Inferior lots at proportionately less. HeaV' ler weights of country hides are not re celvlng much Interest, but a few sales have been made of buffs at up to 8c for free of grub stock and from 6c to Tc for soorer hides, as to percentage of grubs. Tanners have also operated freely in the calfskin market, cleaning up most of the available supplies In Chicago, New Tork and other Important points, and the active demand has resulted In an appre ciable stiffening of prices. One tanner alone boua-ht about 100.000 skins, In addl tlon to previous large purchases, and paid the advanced price of 21c for bo.uw -m cago packer calfskins -and 20c for Chicago city skins.
