COUNTRY HIDES JNACTIVE
General Improvement la Bast Ex
pected to Be Reflected in
Values Here.
The tone of the hide market throughout
the country continues to improve, which
is regarded as a good indication that raw
materials generally, after reaching mini
mum values, must necessarily do better.
No changes have been, made in local quo-
tations. nor are country hides materially
aigher In any of the eastern markets, but
packer hides have a strong tendency and
calf skins also show more activity and
strength.
Country hides, however, are receiving
more attention in the east and numerous
ales are reported In trade advices of
choice middle west free of grub extremes,
23 to 45 pounds, at from 100 to 11c, and
Inferior lots at proportionately less. HeaV'
ler weights of country hides are not re
celvlng much Interest, but a few sales
have been made of buffs at up to 8c for
free of grub stock and from 6c to Tc for
soorer hides, as to percentage of grubs.
Tanners have also operated freely in
the calfskin market, cleaning up most of
the available supplies In Chicago, New
Tork and other Important points, and the
active demand has resulted In an appre
ciable stiffening of prices. One tanner
alone boua-ht about 100.000 skins, In addl
tlon to previous large purchases, and paid
the advanced price of 21c for bo.uw -m
cago packer calfskins -and 20c for Chicago
city skins. Last sales of New Tork city
calfskins, which are sold per skin for
6 to 7 pounds, 7. to 9 pounds ana 9 to im
pound weights, were at 11.70, 1.95 and
it is Following these transactions, noia
ers talked from 15c to 25c higher, and
hiri. no to 11.80. J2.10 and $2.35 were oe
'.lin.d. Material advances were regis
tered at the recent auction sale in Paris.
.nA prl.. citv calfskins variously so.
vanced from 11 to 31 per cent, according to
welrhta.
Tradinr In packer hides has been some
what restricted of late, owing to advances
asked, but moderate-sized, transactions
have been effected In the Chicago market
in i.rii .aitin hides at 9c for ugnt na
.w. rows and'llc for native steers. Back
salting lots moved freely at 11c for June
to December heavy native cows.
winter extreme light native steers and 8c
and 7c respectively, for winter ugnt ana
extreme Texas steers. About 30.000
mailer Independent packer hides have
also been sold at Chicago at from c to
le under big packer prices. .

NEW YORK, Mav 17. Today's opera

Meager nnbltc nartlclnation seemed re

foreshadow more dividend readjustments.
Similar conditions aDDlled to many

The Usefulness of Our
Reserve Savings Plan
Saving; to meet the fixed expenses of the year is
just as important as saving to get ahead. You
should arrange in advance, to provide for your
insurance premiums, your taxes, your clothing
account, etc By adding the sums of all these
known expenses and each month putting aside one
twelfth of the total in a savings account, you will
insure yourself against their ever again annoying
you. The satisfaction gained is worth the. effort.
