The First Christian church will hold a npecial Armenian relief programme Bunday night. The church has set $1000 as its mark for the fund for the relief of the near east. All churches of the city are planning to make a Christmas offering for the fund and several have sent in their checks al ready. Mrs. Mary Strong sent J. J. Ilandsaker, state director, a check for $100. Several prominent citiaens and business concerns have signified their intention of giving to the Christmas offering and a number contributed yesterday. At a meeting of 40 in Oaston, JSO was collected. Owing to the fact that thousands of women and orphans are starving, the appeal meets with Instantaneous response. The office of the relief committee is in the Stock Exchange bulldijig. Suspect Piscards Evidehci. When Motorcycle Officer Schad responded yesterday to a hurry call to Park and Burnside streets, where a man was naM to be taking various loose articles from automobiles parked in that vicinity, he found James Casey, laborer, with a large quantity of loves and other automobile equip ment in his possession, he reported. He started for the police station with his prisoner and on arriving found that all the alleged stolen articles had been thrown away by Casey on the way. The result was that he had to retrace his course to obtain the "evidence." A tentative charge of vagrancy was placed against Casey. This will probably later be made larceny. Police Are Puzzled. Whether a Kang of auto thieves were operating in the vicinity of East Kifty-seconU and Stanton streets Monday night or whether some peaceful citixens took .1 M. Erlckson, messenger for the Western Union, for a hold-up man, police have been unable to determine. Krickson told Detective Wright that he came upon three men in an auto mobile at that place. Two of the men were shoving the car and a third was at the wheel. When he ap proached he said that one of the trio stuck a revolver in his face and told him to move on. Alleged Koroer Held to Grand Jury. Uawrcnce W. Tucker, who Is charged with forgery of a check for $36.25, which he is said to have passed on II. Enkles at Third and Pine streets on December 1, was held to answer to the grand Jury in munic ipal court. Wis bail was placed at $1000. According to Detectives Hell yer and 1-eonard, Tucker also passed a bad check for $19.25 on J. K. Gill & Co. Clerk Taken on Forgery Charge. -Manuel Alvares alias C. B. Allen, clerk who was living in style at the Portland hotel, was arrested yester day by Detectives Maloney and La Salle on advices from Seattle charg ing him with circulation of bad checks in that city. Alvarez is said to have passed a number of bad checks in Seattle before coming here. Portland authorities, however, were not advised of the exact number or the amounts. Automobile Robes Recovered. Earl Clper, who was arrested on a charge of having In his possession two auto mobile robes stolen from an auto mobile belonging to C. C. Overmlre, 64S Elizabeth street, was held to answer to the grand Jury yesterday by Murficipal Judge Rossman. His bail was placed at $500. The robes were valued at $20 and had been stolen sometime In August. Injuries Are Fatal. Basil Henry Haltung, 30, a conductor on the Southern Pacific, died Monday night at Good Samaritan hospital as the result of injuries he sustained in an accident occurring at Woodburn. He received a crushed leg and internal injuries while attempting to couple some cars. He lived at 872 Pardee street. Hayano, Japanese, was held to answer to the grand jury yesterday by Muni cipal Judge Rossman on a charge of having threatened to shoot M. Itano, workman for the Hammond Lumber company. In a quarrel. Scott, president of the First Na tional bank of Springfield, Or., mis appropriated $85 of a money order sent by S. V. Cagley to the bank for the purpose of covering a check which had been mailed the Oddfellow lodge In that city, resulting In the arrest and three days' incarceration of Cagley on embezzlement charges. Is the allegation of a complaint filed in the federal court yesterday by Cagley seeking actual damages of $450.32 and punitive damages of $25,000. Cagley Insists that Scott Used the money sent in his care to meet the expected check to collect on a note not yet due. Larceny Suspect Jailed. Russell Moxley was arrested by Detectives Hellyer and Gordon yesterflay on a warrant charging him with having taken a phonograph, chinaware, pic tures and bedding valued at $500 be longing to Lillian Goodman, 33 North Nineteenth street. He was charged with larceny and his bail was placed at $1000. He will be tried in municipal court today. Michael Ward Arraigned. Michael Ward, Joint defendant with A. L. Long, ex-policeman, in an indictment charging them with impersonating a federal officer, was arraigned in fed eral court yesterday and entered a plea of not guilty. Street Railway Company Sued.--For injuries received when street cars started too soon as they were stepping aboard. Laura B. Murphy and Rosa Hunt ask $5000 each insults filed against the Portland Railway, Light & Power company in the cir cuit court yesterday. Both were in jured last August. Damages for $5000 Asked. Dam ages of $5000 are asked by Julia A. Arnot of the Portland Railway, Light & Power company in a suit filed in the circuit court yesterday for alleged injuries received in a street-car acci dent last October, near Milwaukie. The entire Orpheum show will be presented in an extra performance to night, special arrangements to this effect having been made with the Helllg theater company on account of the general excellence of the show and Us drawing power In the holiday sea. son. It Is a three-star show, head lined by Gus Edwards and his proteges. Gus Edwards, himself, is appearing in Orpheum vaudeville in the far west for the first time in six years. His vehicle this season is called "A Wel come Home Song Revue." with sing ing and dancing in which the cele Alice and Hel Furness, at Orpheum. b rated composer-actor-producer-man- ager Is assisted by Vincent O Donnell "The Kid McCormack," and Alice and Hazel Furness, stage beauties. Vin cent O'Donnell is heard in several solos and the act is enlivened by sev eral scenic changes, costume changes by the girls and the general vivacity of Mr. Edwards himself, who Is on the stage almost constantly. The extra added attraction of the Christmas-week show is the act of the Arnaut brothers, musical clowns whose portrayal of "The Loving Birds" is one of the comedy classics of big-time vaudeville. The other fea ture is the offering of Ernest Evans and his four prettv girls, who have a singing, dancing and Instrumental en tertainment that is praised as being one of the high lights of the Orpheum season. . The Orpheum bill throughout Is a girly show, ten girls, all pretty and magnificently gowned, taking part in the various acts. Construction of What Promises to B Costliest Enterprise Here Next Year la Under Way. Construction of the new Montgom ery Ward plant on the site of the old fair grounds, which promises to be the costliest building enterprise in Portland during the coming year, was begun this week, when steam shov els began the excavation for the structure. A force of about 26 men began working this week with the shovels, and it Is estimated that between 85, 000 and 40,000 yards of earth will have to be moved. The basement floor of the building will be built only a few feet below tlte surface of the ground, making outside windows available for lighting. The railway tracks which will provide for the loading and unloading of soods di rectly in the building will be upon thfs level. Additional excavation will be needed for the boiler rooms, which will be constructed on a lower level. Offices for P. A, Wells and J. R. Patterson of Wells brothers, Chicago firm in charge of building, have been opened In the Yeon building, and erec tion of a small building has been started upon the grounds where of fices also will be maintained. The contract for excavating has been awarded to the Cooke Excavating company, a local firm, on a per yard basis. , WOMAN SUES TO RECOVER u R. DEWEY, CHIROPRACTOR, IS NAMED DEFENDANT. Bertha Thompson Alleges Value of Texas Land Is Misrepresented for Purpose of Sale. That H. R. Dewey, chiropractor in the Morgan building, took advantage of the lack of business knowledge of Bertha Thompson, aged 31, who had been a housemaid or servant since the age of 13 years, to sell her an Interest worth less than $100 In Texas land for $3000 on which $1770 already has been paid, is the charge in a suit filed in the circuit court yes terday by which return of the money paid is sought. The plaintiff asserts that Dewey told her that the five acres he owned in Texas were easily worth $8000, that a half interest should be worth $5000, but that he would allow her to Invest In a half Interest for only $3000. He persuaded her, she alleges, not to tell her family of the In vestment, nor to consult an attorney. and drew up a contract showing that $1500 was the purchase priee with the explanation that It would be Im proper to recite the actual considera tion of $3000. The land is not worth more than $40 an acre, insists the woman, after investigation. Of the $1770 already paid. $600 was paid in liberty bonds. according to the complaint. $1250 REPORTED STOLEN Dealer Declares Man Picked Up Hand Bag and Eled. When H. Oppeman, proprietor of a soft drink establishment at 261 Front street, set down a hand bag contain ing $1250, on the sidewalk yesterday morning about 6 o'clock while he un locked his place of business a man seized the hand bag and fled, accord ing to a report which he made to Pa trolman A. Miller. The man with the hand bag ran up Madison street and then down Sec ond and then turned and ran up Salmon street. Mr. Oppeman. who had given chase, lost sight of him then. Oppeman told Detective Tom Swen- nes that he had seen the man who took the hand bag around Portland before and had known him to be a bootlegger. He did not know the man s name. Mr. Oppeman said that he was in the habit of bringing down large sums of money on certain days for use in cashing checks.
