MONTGOMERY WARD BUILDING
EXCAVATION STARTED.
Construction of What Promises to
B Costliest Enterprise Here
Next Year la Under Way.
Construction of the new Montgom
ery Ward plant on the site of the old
fair grounds, which promises to be
the costliest building enterprise in
Portland during the coming year, was
begun this week, when steam shov

structure.
A force of about 26 men began
working this week with the shovels,
and it Is estimated that between 85,
000 and 40,000 yards of earth will
have to be moved. The basement
floor of the building will be built only
a few feet below tlte surface of the
ground, making outside windows
available for lighting. The railway
tracks which will provide for the
loading and unloading of soods di
rectly in the building will be upon
thfs level. Additional excavation will
be needed for the boiler rooms, which
will be constructed on a lower level.
Offices for P. A, Wells and J. R.
Patterson of Wells brothers, Chicago
firm in charge of building, have been
opened In the Yeon building, and erec
tion of a small building has been
started upon the grounds where of
fices also will be maintained. The
