The banquet was atended by a num ber of Portland's leading business men and representative s, on special invi tation from the local association, with a. view to alig-ninir more closely rela tions between Portland and Coos coun ty. The Portland contingent arrived on the 1 o'clock train and spent the aft ernoon a mo n -r the I usiness houses in MarshJield and North Bend, acquaint ing themselves with local repi esenta tives and looking over industries. Manager Clark of the Home In dustry league, who gave one of the leading, talks, spoke of the need of subst.tnt.al and permanent industries thai will furnish not merely spasmodic employment for Oregon s workmen, but constant and dependable occupations that will result in the laboring element enjoying conditions under which its members can accumulate money. County to Be Viwlted. The Coos County Business Mens as sociation has been in existence for five years and was organied for the purpose of protecting tradesmen, establishing standard business conditions and fostering- commercial relations with other communities. It is a branch of the state organization. Plates were laid Unight for persons and n. embers of the association were present from North Bend. Banuon, Coquille. Myrtie Point and Powers. A number of the Portland business mrn have arranged to remain in the county for several days and will call n mediants in the Coquille valley and North Bend. .Manager Clark of the Mate association, will visit all parts of the county to acquaint himself with conditions and strengthen the local as soctati-n. Included in the troops today were the first battalion, headquarters company, a machine pun company, supply com pany and band, there being 700 men and 40 officers, in command of Colonel Willis I'line. The first battalion is in chaj-gti of Major Brooks Jr., son of Colonel Brooks, who was major ki com mand of the battalion when it left here for border duty about three years ago.
