tel, was mainly cn reconstruction and

Business is just now feeling its way
lowly back to the eventual changes
that must come with the cessation of
Mar conditions, meat speakers de
clared. The banquet was atended by a num
ber of Portland's leading business men
and representative s, on special invi
tation from the local association, with
a. view to alig-ninir more closely rela
tions between Portland and Coos coun
ty. The Portland contingent arrived on
the 1 o'clock train and spent the aft
ernoon a mo n -r the I usiness houses in
MarshJield and North Bend, acquaint
ing themselves with local repi esenta
tives and looking over industries.

The principal itemof the programme
were accorded to the visitors and a
number of excellent addresses were
made. Manager Clark of the Home In
dustry league, who gave one of the
leading, talks, spoke of the need of
subst.tnt.al and permanent industries
thai will furnish not merely spasmodic
employment for Oregon s workmen, but
constant and dependable occupations
that will result in the laboring element
enjoying conditions under which its
members can accumulate money.
The programme following the ban

County to Be Viwlted.
The Coos County Business Mens as
sociation has been in existence for five
years and was organied for the purpose
of protecting tradesmen, establishing
standard business conditions and fostering-
commercial relations with other
communities. It is a branch of the
state organization. Plates were laid

of the association were present from
North Bend. Banuon, Coquille. Myrtie
Point and Powers.
A number of the Portland business
mrn have arranged to remain in the
county for several days and will call
n mediants in the Coquille valley and
North Bend. .Manager Clark of the
Mate association, will visit all parts
of the county to acquaint himself with
conditions and strengthen the local as
soctati-n. Theodore Bergman is among
those wno intend staying' to make the

Henderson filed a suit for $100,000
against Mrs. Tyler, William Tyler's 86-year-old
mother, for alienation of af

Henderson fled the state.

what the excitement was, were de
liKhted to learn that it was the old Cist
infantry returning to Vancouver bar
racks, their old home.
Included in the troops today were the
first battalion, headquarters company,
a machine pun company, supply com
pany and band, there being 700 men
and 40 officers, in command of Colonel
Willis I'line. The first battalion is in
chaj-gti of Major Brooks Jr., son of
Colonel Brooks, who was major ki com
mand of the battalion when it left here
for border duty about three years ago.
The other two battalions are at Kort
1. A. Russell. Wyoming. The first bat
talion arried today from Kort Kear
ny, Cal.

ical committee. Senator Eddy's bill pro- ;
viding for the regulation and work of !
the state board of health passed the i
senate today on third reading. !
The bill, as introduced, was attacked
by Christian Scientists that it struck
at their religious liberties. Those parts
to which et rious objection was made
were eliminated.
Settlement Hoard Authorized.

reconstruction measures received favor
able action today when Senator Eddy's
bill creating" the ofegon land settle
ment board passed the senate on third
reading. The commission will assist
returned soldiers and sailors in locat
ing on Oregon lands. It is authorized
to co-operate with the federal govern
ment in its assistance to soldiers.
It Is estimated that there are be

Pennsylvania made orphans by the in
fluenza epidemic.
