12 ' THE MORXIXG OREGONIAN, SATU11DAY, XOVE3IBER 16, 1918. MULTNOMAH GUARD N TILT OVER ARMORY Adjutant-General Orders Va cation, Is Assertion. STRONG PROTEST IS MADE Charlrs F. Brebe, of National Guard Organization, Denies Making Or der, and Asks Co-operation. Orders for vacation of the Armory were Issued to the Multnomah Guard late yesterday, according to Colonel L. C. Campbell, commander, by Adjutant Oeneral Beebe. in order that the or ganization of the new Oregon National Guard may proceed. The orders have aroused a storm of protest from the home defense regiment and from public officials, among whom are Mayor Baker and Sheriff Hurlburt. Holding that the Multnomah Guard is an asset to the state, the protest ing; officers and officials eaid that the need for the reiriment' was never creater than it will be throughout the reconstruction period. The issue, it was said, would be taken to Governor Vithycombe for decision. Adjutant-General Beebe last night flatly denied that summary orders to vacate the Armory were issued by him. He said that the Multnomah Guard had been asked to co-operate with the Ore gon National Guard and- tnat it was not the intention to force the guard to And quarters elsewhere. He expressed the hope that such co-operation would be forthcoming. "We have Just received a letter from Adjutant-General Beebe directing us to vacate the Armory and arrange for quarters elsewhere. starting Mon day." said Colonel L. P. Camp bell, "at which time we are to vacate the quarters held by Company K. which he says must be available to Colonel North that night for a pros pective National Guard organization. "The Multnomah Guard was organ ized at the suggestion of George A. 'White, then Adjutant-General of the state, Withycombe, who declared the neces sity for such an organization. "This organization has grown from four companies to eight companies of infantry, a headquarters company which Includes a 110-piece band, a machine gun company, a hospital corps and sup ply company. It has answered every call for service. The ejection from the Armory is direct affront to a unit of 1400 business men and taxpayers, whose sole thought and purpose was. to serve their state and Nation during a trying period. "We have the interests of Oregon too much at heart to submit readily to that which would in any way prove detri mental to the welfare of the regimen during the coming stage of readjust ment and reconstruction. We are pre pared and resolved to force this issu to a conclusion. Sheriff Hurlburt. commander-in-chief of the Multnomah Guard, was more than disconcerted by the summary re quest for evacuation of the Armory. The regiment is just as necessary, if not more so, at the present time than it was a year ago, said the Sheriff, "Its availability during the reconstruc tion period will be of tremendous value to Oregon. I have taken the matter of the regiment's ejection from the Arm ory up with Governor Withycombe. He has promised to delay action until Monday. On Monday morning I intend to visit the Statehouse and personally lay the documents in the case before Governor v ithycombe. Mayor Baker said that every effort must be made to keep the Multnomah Guard intact. "I sincerely hope," he said, "that nothing will' be done that will interfere with their future use fulness."
