KO WOOL FOR CIVILIAN CLOTHING Army, Navy and Red Cross Will Require Mora Than Tola Country Produce). SAN FRANCISCO. Aug. 20. The Army. Navy and Red Cross require 900.000.000 pounds of wool and this country's produc tion tm year will bo 280,000.000. conse quently no wool will go Into clothing for civilians this year, stated Lewis Penwell. United States Wool Administrator, who ar rived here today from Oregon. Mr. Penwell addressed a gathering of wool men and declared that owing to the de mand of ships for war purposes, no tonnags could bo spared to bring to this country wool for civilian clothing. The only wool now being released for other than war use Is for paper makers' felt, for fume bags for smelters and for gaskets for steam engines. These, Id reality, are war uses. No band knitting yarn Is to be made, said Mr. Penwell. and orders undoubtedly win be Issued stopping the manufacture of fancy Indian blankets and Navajo ruga. Net Gaina Rangliig Up to 2 Cents. CHICAGO, Aug. 20. The persistency of damage reports from Southern Nebraska and Iowa, as well as the Southwest, coupled with marked strength at Kansas City, brought about active trading in corn fu tures today, prices scoring net advances of 2K2c and closing strong. The advance brought out stop-loss orders and. although there was some heavy profit taking on the bulge, the advance was well maintained. October corn closed 2"4c up at 31.65. Oat were bought by shippers today and by shorts who were Impressed by the corn strength. The undertone of the market was strong. Closing prices were 2 cents over yesterday, October at 74 c. In provisions the removal of tho max imum price restriction from dry salted meata by the Food Administration brought about higher prices. The trend -was downward the past week on nearly all leadrng lines of fruits and vegetables, but except for cantaloupes the declines were light to moderate Carlot movement was not particularly heavy; 8945 cars, compared with 8404 cars last week and 10,294 the corresponding week last year. Apples, potatoes and California fruits showed consideratle increase over last week's fig ures, but other leading commodities moved in lighter volume, according to the weekly produce review, issued yesterday by R. L. Ringer, In charge of the local office of the Bureau of Markets. Potatoes have changed hands the past week with scarcely a fluctuation in price from the Atlantic to the Pacific Best Cali fornia stock is selling around $3.75 per hun dred In the Northwest and $3 in Ios An geles. Prices are higher in the Northwest than In the Eastern centers of population. which is accounted for by tho almost total failure of the early crops of Oregon ana Washington. The Western slop of Colorado is becoming a heavy shipper. The week trading In onions has been on a steady basis, with a slight retreat In prices for Western yellow stock.
