KO WOOL FOR CIVILIAN CLOTHING

Navy and Red Cross require 900.000.000
pounds of wool and this country's produc
tion tm year will bo 280,000.000. conse
quently no wool will go Into clothing for
civilians this year, stated Lewis Penwell.
United States Wool Administrator, who ar
rived here today from Oregon.
Mr. Penwell addressed a gathering of wool
men and declared that owing to the de
mand of ships for war purposes, no tonnags
could bo spared to bring to this country
wool for civilian clothing. The only wool
now being released for other than war use
Is for paper makers' felt, for fume bags for
smelters and for gaskets for steam engines.
These, Id reality, are war uses.
No band knitting yarn Is to be made, said
Mr. Penwell. and orders undoubtedly win
be Issued stopping the manufacture of fancy
Indian blankets and Navajo ruga.
Charges ef discrepancies in the valuation
of wool la Boston were discussed. Mr.
Penwell said some changes In procedure in
the valuation of wool which were advocated
by California growers probably would be
made soon.

CHICAGO, Aug. 20. The persistency of
damage reports from Southern Nebraska
and Iowa, as well as the Southwest, coupled
with marked strength at Kansas City,
brought about active trading in corn fu
tures today, prices scoring net advances of
2K2c and closing strong. The advance
brought out stop-loss orders and. although
there was some heavy profit taking on the
bulge, the advance was well maintained.
October corn closed 2"4c up at 31.65.
Oat were bought by shippers today and
by shorts who were Impressed by the corn
strength. The undertone of the market
was strong. Closing prices were 2 cents
over yesterday, October at 74 c.
In provisions the removal of tho max
imum price restriction from dry salted
meata by the Food Administration brought
about higher prices. Closing prices were
at a net advance of 57)s cents in lard,
25 iff 27 cents In ribs to 40 60 cents In
pork.

The trend -was downward the past week
on nearly all leadrng lines of fruits and
vegetables, but except for cantaloupes the
declines were light to moderate Carlot
movement was not particularly heavy; 8945
cars, compared with 8404 cars last week and
10,294 the corresponding week last year.
Apples, potatoes and California fruits showed
consideratle increase over last week's fig
ures, but other leading commodities moved
in lighter volume, according to the weekly
produce review, issued yesterday by R. L.
Ringer, In charge of the local office of the
Bureau of Markets.
Potatoes have changed hands the past
week with scarcely a fluctuation in price
from the Atlantic to the Pacific Best Cali
fornia stock is selling around $3.75 per hun
dred In the Northwest and $3 in Ios An
geles. Prices are higher in the Northwest
than In the Eastern centers of population.
which is accounted for by tho almost total
failure of the early crops of Oregon ana
Washington. In ordinary years they supply
Northwestern needs after July 15. but this
year California and Idaho stocks ar still
being imported. .The shipments of th past
week increased heavily to 2490 car after
two weeks of light shipments. 1661 and 1774
cars respectively. The Western slop of
Colorado is becoming a heavy shipper.
The week trading In onions has been on
a steady basis, with a slight retreat In prices
for Western yellow stock. Heavier receipts
from nearby sections dropped Washington
and California yellows to a range of $2.70
3.50, whereas & week ago they reached as
high as $3.75 In Kansas City. Shipments
for the week totaled 332 cars, of which Cali
fornia shipped 181 and Washington 46. New
York stepped forward yesterday as a heavy
shipper with 19 cars.
The peach crop of 1918 Is fast losing its
commercial importance in a large part 01
the country, but la still a vital factor In the
Northwest, where the late crop Is yet to
move. The Spring frosts cut tnat materi
ally so it will not be as large a deal as in
previous years. California Elbertas were
commanding $1.4001.50 per box, both In the
Middle West and Northwest a week ago,
but they have slumped as low as $1 since
then In the Middle west, Kortnwest values
still continue high, but later varieties are
superseding the Elbertas. Shipments the
past week totaled 5S7 cars, as against 810
cars the previous week and. 1309 cars tho
week before.
California cantaloupes declined sharply
with a general range at the close of the
seven days of $2.503.25. compared with
$44.75 tho previous week. New York,
which quoted extremely high prices last
week, declined this week to $2.25. Present
prices are still higher than prevailed last
year, when the Jobbin? rana-e for the cor
responding week was $1.50 2. 50.
Shipments of grapes, pears and plums
from the Paclfio Coast sections again In
creased and prices tended lower. Choice
Bartletts ranged $2.25 2. 75, f. o. b. Sacra
mento, hut sold nearly steady In leading
consuming markets at $3 3.75 per box.
Malaga grapes declined 5075c. ranging
generally $2.103 per four-basket crate.
Movement of pears was 1174, compared with
1112 last week. Plums, 830 cars, compared
with 224 last week, and grapes, 632 cars,
compared with 424 last week.
Western boxed apples are beginning to ap
pear In Middle Western markets, where they
sold at a general range of $2.753.25. Total
apple shipments showed continued Increase
with 436 cars compared with 412 last week.
Tomato shipments were S27 cars, compared
with 258 last week. The Sacramento dis
trict crop Is officially v reported reduced by

NEW YORK, Aug. 20. Trading In stocks
today bradensd on a slight increase of
activity. Tho expansion was accompanied
by a general strengthening of the list, al
though shippings, rails and a few specialties
were again most conspicuous.
Liberty 3.54 continued their upward prog
ress to the new high quotation of 101.14,
many lots changing hands at or near that
figure. Other liberty Issues were active.
but without appreciable change.
A significant development of the day was
the adoption of a resolution by the clearing
house committee expressing its entire sym-

mendations recently advanced by the Fed
eral Reserve Board. Indefinite continuance
of tight money is expected as a result of
the action.
Canadian Pacific was once more the out
standing feature of the Investment issues,
augmenting its recent advance with an addi
tional gross gain of 4 points. Other trans
continentals were firm.
Next to United States Steel, which gained
trifle. Mercantile Marine preferred was
most active.
American Telephone registered another
substantial recovery, its further rise preced
ing declaration of the regular dividend and
Western Union also made up part of its
loss. Sales amounted to 190,0K shares.
Domestic bonds were irregular and Inter
nationals featureless. Total sales, par value,
$7,150,0001. Old registered 4s lost 54" per
cent on sales.
