THE MORNING OREGONIAN. FRIDAY. JULY 19, 1918. ' FOREST FIRES WANE Rangers Report Situation as i., Much Improved. CLOUDY SKIES WELCOME 31aze In Rainier Forest, Which Has Burned Over Immense Area, Is Believed to Be Near End of Its Career. Little of moment developed in the forest fire situation yesterday, and for estry officials expressed confidence that the situation was much improved and tending toward complete control. "With the exception of the Cispus fire the various blazes were inactive. The Cispus fire, in the Rainier for est, which has burned over an aera of 40,000 acres, was reported to for estry headquarters as having jumped to the Lewis River territory and headed for an Invasion of the Columbia forest. To this fire have been dispatched approximately 120 men, who were Joined yesterday by F. H. Brundage, supervisor of the Columbia forest, and M. L. Jlerritt, forest examiner, who left Portland on a tour of personal investi gation. No apprehension was felt at forestry headquarters over the status of the Cispus fire, which was believed j to De well in nana ana near the end ol Its careeer. Practically all of the timber de stroyed by the Cispus conflagration is second-growth forest on the area swept by the fierce fire of 1902, when the rolling smoke clouds lay so dense that Portland lighted its lamps at noon one September day. Confined to this sec ond growth of lusty young trees, the fire is neither as intense nor the dam age as great as would have been the case in another area. The fire east of Yacolt, in the Co lumbia Forest near the Gum Boot rang er station, also skirting and flirting with an area burned over years ago, was said yesterday to be nearing con trol. Rangers and other 'forestry men blessed the cloudy weather yesterday, even though no rain fell; for it is a fact, they assert, that forest fires do not flourish in cloudy weather with the vim they display when the world is sunny. They die down and burn slowly and afford the fire fighters re newed opportunity to check their prog ress. "It may be that the increased atraos pheric prpssure, on cloudy days, is re AMUSEMENTS. All day the grassy lawn is dotted with families and picnic parties who have left the turmoil of the city behind and come out to the park to enjoy basket dinners under the big oak trees. While the older folks sit on the long comfortable benches and chat, the young ones play near by in the many swings that have been provided for their amusement and entertainment. Members of the Lang Syne So ciety gathered there Wednesday for their annual outing, and they say they never had a merrier, pleasanter time in all their lives. "It was a lovely afternoon and a lovely place to spend it," said Frank Dayton, secretary of the so ciety. "We couldn't have selected a pleasanter place," echoed Presi dent Beach. General Beebe, Judge Charles H. Carey and F. V. Hol man, who also attended the picnic, were others who praised the park as a typical and convenient spot for outdoor gatherings. Others organizations and so cieties are invited to the park for their annual gatherings. Every thing possible will be done for their comfort and convenience. Cars at First and Alder streets.
