Homesteaders desir ing to work in shipyards during the war will be rrranted limited leaves of absence from their lands Under an order of the Commissioner of the General Land Office. The Commlsloner cays: "There Is no authority of law under which the leave of absence may be grant ed to a homesteader for that purpose, but, in view of the urgent need of lab orers in certain war industries, home stead entries in proper cases may be suspended for a period not to exceed one year at any one time. The pur pose of such suspension Is to protect the entry against contest for aban donment or failure to cultivate and make the improvements required by law. during the period of such sus pension, and the time does not count as part of the statutory life of the en try. "In order to procure such suspension of his entry the claimant ehould sub mit his application to this office through the local land office in the form of an affidavit executed before an officer authorised to administer oaths, showing the nature or his employment, where and by whom employed, the probable duration of auch employment and plainly indentlflng his entry. This af fldavlt ehould be supported by a cer tificate of his employer concerning the facts of such employment and stating mat nis services are actually needed. Naval Reserve, who joined the colors a few weeks ago following a number of years" service with the San Francisco & Portland, Steamship Company, is to be com mander of the new 8S00-ton steamer West Indian, which has been assigned to the Navy. Lieutenant-Commander Rankin and other officers, as well aa the enll6ted Navy personnel that will be aboard, have reached the city. The West Indian Is the first of tha Portland-built carriers to be turned over to the Navy and is being prepared now for her endurance run. The ves sel was the fourth floated -by the Co lumbia River Shipbuilding Corporation, and there is every reason to expoct her to give a good account of herself. She is to be moved into the lower hanbor today, and, while not in charge until her official acceptance) her crew is ex hibiting a deep interest in their new; home. Not alone is the West Indian a Portland ship, but Lieutenant- Commander Rankin is a Portlander.
