Bradstreet's to morrow will aay: War needs naturally grow at a great rate and industrial operations In lines essential to them continue to expand. Cereal crop news is exceptionally favorable, whatever av be conjectured as to storm effects on Northern fruits and Southern truck. Wholesale trade In staple commodities is probably as active as could be expected, seeing that aupplles are short, that quota tlons are Inordinately high and that the Government gives Indication of eventually extending a firm grasp over the price situa tion In many lines of manufacture. But prices aeem to cut less of a figure on civilian nurchaeea than does the evident fear of a paucity of goods, especially of textiles, and. therefore, many reports disclose heavy buy ing, not only for immediate delivery but for future shipment aa well. On the other hand, activity In retail trade has simmered down since Easter. Weekly bank clearings were f 5,641,ss7,oou. Coffee Futures Stiffened Up. NEW YORK. Anril 12. Call Strike, but Men Dae to Handle Cargo Are Bfiaslns When Boat Docks. ASTORIA, Or., April 12. (Special.) While no strike haa been declared by the Longshoremen's Union, none of the members of that organization in the Astoria district are working cargo ves sels today with the exception of a few who are loading the barkentine James Tuft at Westport and a few more who this morning finished discharging the cement cargo from the steam schooner Daisy Freeman. The reason Is a fail ure to secure an increase in wages. For months the longshoremen have been paid 65 cents an hour, with $1 for overtime. They are asking for 85 cents an hour, with $1.25 for overtime. When tbe steam schooner Halco ar rived at the Hammond mill no long shoremen reported to load her and the men said that unless they can get the advance asked for they will engage In other work. The same condition is true regarding the steam schooner Daisy, which shifted this morning to Knapp ton to finish ber cargo. In refusing to work the men acted as individuals and not upon a vote of the union. Both of these vessels are being loaded by their crews and men from the mills. At a conference this morning with representatives of the local Longshore men's Union, Manager Shaw, of the Hammond Lumber Company, offered to pay the men, beginning today, what ever scale of wages the Federal Adjust ment Board may fix. His offer was to pay the men (he present scale at once and later on allow them whatever in crease the board may set The men say this is the fairest offer that any of tbe shipowners has made them.
