NEW TORK. April 12. Stocks ma.ie sub
stantial recover. today from their extreme
depression of the previous session, but the
tone remained dull. Inttreet again centered
in the war news, which threw ilulo litht
5t.th cour of event across th water.
The market's liquidated condition was clear
ly demonstrated by the ease with which
stanuard shares rallied from occasional
pressure. A few specisjtlc wer fuiry
active, but their movements elicited no pub
lic Interest.
. Hails wer sluggish but firm. Equip
ment gained 1 lu points with coppers,
motors and oil, sad shippings hardened
after early hesitation. Specialties were fea
turd by Industrial, Alcohol and Distillers,
tbe latter leading the market at an ex
treme gain of a points. Sales amounted
to -'15.tHJ shares.
General news aside from th progress of
tha liberty loan dnvo and Dn.inri I Y ni.r.

equipment waa mostly negative and
without bearing upon values.
In the market for foreisn remittances, an
unusual development was the scarcity of ex
change on SpHin. attributed to the n la rued
trade operations of London and Tails with
thst country.
Th usual Irregularity extendlnr to Inter
national Issues waa manifested by the bond

WAR NEEDS STEADILT INCREASING
Oixrations in Esaentbal Lines Continue to
Expand.
NEW TOP.K. April 12. Bradstreet's to
morrow will aay:
War needs naturally grow at a great rate
and industrial operations In lines essential
to them continue to expand. Cereal crop
news is exceptionally favorable, whatever
av be conjectured as to storm effects on
Northern fruits and Southern truck.
Wholesale trade In staple commodities is
probably as active as could be expected,
seeing that aupplles are short, that quota
tlons are Inordinately high and that the
Government gives Indication of eventually
extending a firm grasp over the price situa
tion In many lines of manufacture. But
prices aeem to cut less of a figure on civilian
nurchaeea than does the evident fear of a
paucity of goods, especially of textiles, and.
therefore, many reports disclose heavy buy
ing, not only for immediate delivery but
for future shipment aa well. On the other
hand, activity In retail trade has simmered
down since Easter.

CHICAGO. April 12. Likelihood of big
receipts here, including: ihlpmenls from HU

do with a sharp setback which took place
today in corn prices. The market closed
weak at tbe same as yesterday's finish to

Talk of an increase in the crop movement
next week was current and considerable
notice was taken of tbe fact that hedging
ales, unlike other pit transactions, are not
limited to any specific total. Authorita
tive warnings were also circulated that if
the removal of the maximum price rul ex
ercised an- unduly bullish influence, spec
ulative holdings would be cut to 10,000
bushels.
Oals weakened with corn and as a result
of ideal weather for the growing crop.
Eastern demand seemed dead.

Vnion Falls 4. Call Strike, but Men Dae
to Handle Cargo Are Bfiaslns
When Boat Docks.
ASTORIA, Or., April 12. (Special.)
While no strike haa been declared by
the Longshoremen's Union, none of the
members of that organization in the
Astoria district are working cargo ves
sels today with the exception of a few
who are loading the barkentine James
Tuft at Westport and a few more who
this morning finished discharging the
cement cargo from the steam schooner
Daisy Freeman. The reason Is a fail
ure to secure an increase in wages.
For months the longshoremen have
been paid 65 cents an hour, with $1
for overtime. They are asking for 85
cents an hour, with $1.25 for overtime.
When tbe steam schooner Halco ar
rived at the Hammond mill no long
shoremen reported to load her and the
men said that unless they can get the
advance asked for they will engage In
other work. The same condition is true
regarding the steam schooner Daisy,
which shifted this morning to Knapp
ton to finish ber cargo.
In refusing to work the men acted
as individuals and not upon a vote of
the union. Both of these vessels are
being loaded by their crews and men
from the mills.
At a conference this morning with
representatives of the local Longshore
men's Union, Manager Shaw, of the
Hammond Lumber Company, offered to
pay the men, beginning today, what
ever scale of wages the Federal Adjust
ment Board may fix. His offer was to
pay the men (he present scale at once
and later on allow them whatever in
crease the board may set
The men say this is the fairest offer
that any of tbe shipowners has made
them. They, however, decline to ac- (
