15 THE MORXIXG OREGOXIAN", 2IOXDAY, APRIIi 8, 1918. GOOD ASSURED Plans for City Supply Soon to Be Completed. SEASON WILL OPEN MAY 1 Trap Fishermen Acrre lo Irllrcr lo Municipal Market at Co! All or Catch Save Salmon. Uali bat and Sturgeon. Arrancemrnts for th shipment to Portland' municipal fub market of all crap fish caught in traps along; tha Columbia River will be completed some time this week by City Commissioner Kellahcr and W. P. Studdert. of the Vnited State Bureau of Fisheries. The fishing season opens May 1. Mr. Studrtort on a recent trip along; the Columbia got the trap fishermen to sign an agreement to deliver to tha rlty at col all f;sh except salmon, halibut and sturpeon causcht in the traps during; the salmon season. The uniivrslandtfijr la the agreement la that the fish wl:i be sold on the municipal fish market. Mr. Sluldert haa notified Commis sioner Kellaher that he will return to Portland this week and accompany blm on a trip along; tha river to com plete arrangements for handling1 the fish. The plan to be worked out probably will Involve the delivery or the Hull to railroad or boat shipping points where it will be boxed and sent to Portland by express or freight. Ar rangements are being made for cold storage facilities so that none of the fish will spoiL The fishermen's oroposal Is to give their catches of scrap fish to tha city' at the aJtual cost of handling. This will mean. It Is figured, not mora than a cent a pound. Another cent will be ad'led for transportation to Portland. hreMIng the fish at the market for something like two cents a pound. The city will then be able to sell it for from three cents to five cents a pound. The drive Is expected to prove an Important factor In the city's food problem. Hundreds or tons of the tlsn are caught each season and with the prices low It is expected thousands of rcople will take advantage. Most of theso fish have been wasted hereto' fore. Included In the scrap fish list are rwk cod. ling cod. red snappers and several other rock fish that come Into the Columbia Kiver from tha ocean with the run of salmon. Plans are beinjr made for classes for the Instruction of women In the proper cooking of these fish, which are unknown to many Housekeepers. Whalo Season Opens Soon. .IbERPEEX. Wash.. April 7.
