FIT ST CHRISTMAS TXJEKETS ARRIVE Lrocal . Market Will Open Wednesday and Dealers Expect Firm Prices. The Christmas turkey market will open on Wednesday. Early shipments are beginning to arrive, but there is little demand yet. A few sales were reported yesterday at 26 and 27 cents. There is a wide difference of opinion as to Wednesday's price, but most of the dealers look for a firm market. The egg market opened steady, with only a limited demand. The price generally aked on the street was 33 cents, case count. Butter was weak, with 34 cents the top price asked for extras. NEW-CROP DATES ARE RECEIVED Opening: Prices Are Higher Than Those of Last Year. The first car of new-crop dates arrived yesterday. Prices announced were $2.50 per box on Fard s and 15 cents a pound on Hallowees. There was & one-third delivery on Fards. A small assortment of Southern vegetables was brought up on the eteamer. The street is well equipped with all lines except sweet potatoes, a car of which will arrive today or tomorrow. NEW YORK, Dec. 18. The ebb and flow of peace rumors constituted the most vital factor of today's market, advances and de clines at times occurring' in bewildering fashion. There were occasional reminders of the turbulent movements that created such serious - unsettlement and attrition during the previous week. Industrial Alcohol re cording an extreme decline of almost 10 points, with pronounced pressure, verging upon weakness. In motors, metals and ship pins' shares. Dealings lacked breadth and fell away to the comparatively small total of 1.250,000 shares. More than half of the trading took place in the forenoon, industrials, coppers and secondary rails being the most con spicuous features. - Favorable aururlee were found In the bet ter bank statement and the continuance of easy money rates. Nevertheless, responsible financial interests again counselled caution, and special stocks experienced a further evellns in bank loan si Public Interest w egligible, except in railroads, for which the recent inquiry was well sustained. Gross advances of 1 to almost S point were scored by low-priced rails, with free aklngs of Wabash preferred shares, Lake Erie A Western. Wheeling A Lake Erie. Western Maryland, and Chicago Great West ern preferred. Coalers, as a group, reflected the short ge of that commodity, which threatened to curtail the Immediate output of leading steel and iron mills. Southern Railway as the most active of all rails, but reacted on realizing sales. United States Steel led the entire list. fluctuating with a range of -2 points and losm at a net loss of 14. Copper was consistently heavy, a condition attributed to reported price concessions by some of the big producers for future ' deliveries of the metal, and by-products dropped sympathet ically. A belated advance In some of the petro leums. Harvester iesuea and other stocks of less definite description was offset by ve reals in seasoned shares, the tone at the close being distinctly irregular. Exchange on the Teutonlc'countriee yielded perceptibly from last week's recovery, lires also receding abruptly with rubles and moderate shading of francs Chile copper 7s featured the uneven bond maaket at an advance of over 5 points. American farm era, foreseeing a continued heavy demand on them from the warring- European nationi for wheat, planted an acreage of that grain this Fall second in point of size In the Na tion's history, but poor weather condition sent the crop Into Winter dormancy 2 per cent below the condition of last December and 4.5 per cent below the ten-year average. In summarizing Its first report on th Winter wheat crop Issued today, the De partment of Agriculture said: "The Fall plantings of Winter wheat are reported to be 2.3 per cent greater than in the Autumn of 1015. The present area seeded. 40.000.000 acres, is the greatest eve planted, with the exception of the 40.452,000 acres seeded two years' ago, and is more than 10 per cent greater than planted In any year prior to the Fall of 1914. "The high price received for the present year's crop had encouraged an Intention to plant a largely increased acreage, but th unusual dryness at seeding time throughout practically the entire Winter wheat produc ing territory largely prevented this inten tion being realized. "Increases of between 5 and 10 per cent were general in the South Atlantic State: Iowa increased 5 per cent. Ohio 4 and Kan sas 3 per cent. In the Western groun of states. Loioraut? anu uaiuurnm nnuw in creases of 5 per cent over last year. iMon tana remained the same. Utah Is 96, Idah 95. Washington S7 and Oregon 80. The condition of Inter wheat is 87.7 per cent of normal at this time. It Is 2 per cent lower than last year at this time an 4.5 per cent lower than the ten-year average, ranging slightly under vo in most of th Eastern states and between 83 and 93 the Central states. In the West, the condi tion is 90 or slightly above in most state: excepting Washington and Oregon, where It is 72 and 78 respectively. The low condition is almost -uniformly ascribed to the lateness of planting, whlc has prevented wheat from attaining It usual growth at this time and In some in stances late seedings have not yet germ inated. Little mention is made of the Hes sian fly, although it Is In evidence to some extent, particularly In Kansas." Rye sown this Fall Is estimated at 4.214.- 000 acres, an Increase of 740,000 acres over the revised estimate of the area sown in the Fal of 1015. Condition of rye on December 1 was 89.8 per cent of a normal, compared with 91.5 last year, 93.6 in 1914 and 92.9 the ten-year average. Coffee Futures Close at Loss. NEW YORK, Dec. 18. A less favorable view of peace prospects led to further liqui dation by Wall street and cotton trade in terests in the market for coffee futures here today and prices broke pretty sharply In the late trading. Moderate buying by trade and European interests sustained the early mar ket .and after opening unchanged to 3 points lower, prices showed little move ment until well along in the forenoon. Of ferings then increased with March selling off to 8.46c and July to 8.70c. or about 30 points below the high level of last Friday. ClosineT prices were at the lowest point of the day. showing a net loss of 11 to 14 points.
