June 20. (Spe cial.) Manager McDonald, of the Tono baseball team, has signed up McCorkle. a ICelso boy, who is regarded as one, of the best semi-professional twirlers in Southwestern Washington. - McCorkle will work in the game between Tono and Winlock next Sunday. Curley Coen, a Tacoma boy, who has played with Tono the last two seasons, left Sunday to sign with the Great Falls team in the Northwest League. The Sportlight. By Grant! and Rice. What, They gay. Never mind what they say about you. Never mind what they do. or think; Never mind if they pan or knout you. Using the tongue or the printer's ink. The Panvil Chorua is always busy. A chorua that always needs a goat: Let them rail till their tongues get dizzy. "What they say" doesn't row your boat. Let them knock with a rap that's ateady. What do you cars for the outside mob. As long aa ycu have an answer ready f The answer being, "I'm on the Job." FRANCOIS MORAS should be our roost experienced fighter in all lines of endeavor when he ends his next fight. Since returning home he has tackled Jeems Coffey, who was about bis own height and weight. Then he met Willard, who was six Inches :f -1 - ' - h 1 t Cliff Blankenahlp, Manager f Salt Lake Bees. "Who Saya Ha Is Satisfied Witts Ilia Ball Club. taller and who outweighed, him 68 pounds. Now Charles Francis is hooked, up with Jack Dillon, who is five Inches shorter and about 80 pounds lighter. What other sizes have you? Moran should forget all about that Willard fight while, facing Dillon. Else by mistake, through force of habit, he will be swinging three or four feet over Dillon's bobbing bean. What's the Quaint Ideal Ton may recall the names of the hardest hitting infield that has played in 20 years Mclnnia, Collins, Barry anl Baker. Three at least were al ways good for any spot between .330 and. .360. Then they were scattered. Now what's the quaint idea? Have you noticed their batting marks of 19167 Frank Baker, with the Yanks, is bat ting .264. Eddie Collins, with the White Sox. is batting .248.- Jack Barry, with the Red Sox. is bat ting .216. fctuffy Mclnnis. with the Mackmen. is batting .183. There is a saying that is supposed to run something like this: "United we stand; divided we fall." That might be revised to read: "United we bat over .300; divided wo drop back below .250." For it is a remarkable occurrence. Incident or episode that not one of the old Mackian InfieU is batting .270. two months after the season has opened. Only one of the quartet Is over .250, and the average of the four is down around, .225. ' Knowing all the quaint and sudden upsets connected with - baseball, this turn is the strangest of them all. For there isn't a man in the bunch who is yet 30; there isn't a one of them who isn't taking fine care of himself; there Isn't an entry from the lot who Isn't hustling his best and drawing down big money for the iob. Yet here is the answer a combined batting average of .225 for etuffy Mc lnnis, Frank Baker, Eddie Collins anfl Jack Barry 1 And this after two months' play. There are still one or two things in the span of this game that lie be yond the philosophy and dope of all who follow its winding wake. And this is one of them. L. L. J. Robertson, of the Giants, is the leading run getter so far, with an average seven points above Trig Speak er, who has scored more runs, but who has been in a good many more games. Yam Probably Mean This. Sir: Can you give me the rest of that quotation from Shakespeare which be gins. "Cowards die many times before their death,'' etc.T You quoted part of it some time ago. H. R. Peeing that death, a necessary .end. Will come when it will come. "Which is the most famous ath letic combination?" queries Penguin. "Charles Evans and Charles Evans Hughes or T. R. and T. R. CobbT" As if there could be even the faintest wisp of a rivalry around where the T. R. clan is concerned! a A number of dispatches have reported Grover Cleveland Alexander as slipping a bit from overwork last season. Let us, for the moment, make a casual ob servation. Alexander has won 10 games and lost three at this recounting. If this be slipping, Just what is the other thing? Gee! Johnny Dundee Is the guy for ma; - He hops like a flea And stings like a bee.
