An Important factor In shipping is what Is designated as the "mosquito fleet" that plodding, plugging, chug glnt corps of smaller vessels that gather the freight from the highways and bywaya of inland waters and feed their cargoes to the transcontinental railways and trans-Pacific ships. This Includes the internal combustion pow ered craft. Xo one who looks at tlva economic side of tbe combustion en gine's development can fail to feel a wholesome respect for this marveloua aid to the present generation of roan kind. Tima is made Into money by the engine. Tide and wind are defied by ft- Communities are saved by it. Values In property are Increased by it. It Is the greatest single factor in tha development of thousands of places that before Its Introduction were lost and forgotten communities in pockets on Coast, lake or river. a.Maaqnlta Fleet" Important. Of all the good work done by the explosive engine we can agree that freighting ia the most Important. All honor to the freighters the beasts of burden that never complain fetching and carrying the things we need, food, brick, copper, paint, wlndowsashes, cement. 'Whatever ia wanted for the Inner man or for our place of resi dence or as a means of diversion, if we live on coast or lake, comes in tha gasoline freighter. In a battered old hull, deep-laden and pushing valiantly into head wind and sea. there Is some thing of sobriety and dignity, the dig nity of labor, that appeals to our head and heart. Straight on its course it goes, its machine rusty and grimy with caked oil, but true and strong-pumping with the regularity of heart beats. Here is something more f.a be respected than tbe elegantly Immaculate great white power yacht that comes ma jestically Into the harbor and passes the little freighter with a sweep as naughty and disdainful as the grand dame paasing an apple woman. Little cares our old freighter, as she goes steadily on her way. She has business to do. and cannot afford to lose time In repining on the elegance of others. There are, of various classea, over 6200 work boats In Oregon's Inland waters, tow-boats, cannery tenders, fishing boats, freight boats, and pas senger boats and, with very few ex ceptions, all have been built in Oregon from Oregon fir. oak or cedar. Tha first gasoline engine work. boat in Oregon was built by O. P. Graham in 1872. Graham's orders come from tha four parts of the compass and he ia now building a cannery tender for the Canoe Pass Packing Company for use in Alaska waters. The uninitiated will probably look upon pleasure boat construction aa a by-product of big ship building. There appears no limit to tbe pleasure boat industry, local builders having in a few short years built a fleet of pleasure craft of a total valuation of probably over tl. 000. 000 and In the manufactur ing process consumed many million feet of choice Oregon timber. Annually there has been shipped to the Pacific Coast thousands of dollars' worth of knockdown boats for use on mountain lakes. Inland rivers, remote seaport towns and Alaska waters. Tha possibilities of this business has been carefully investigated as a possible outlet for Oregon timber and there Is now a company being formed which will produce knockdown boats up to 75 feet over all. With an abundance of cheap timber this company can com pete with the Eastern factories and will become an enterprise of great commercial Importance to the state. cilities from here, while the Port or Astoria Commission is Interested in a step for the establishment of a steamer line from Astoria to the head of navi gation, which will mean to Pasco and Kennewlck regularly and to include the Snake when there is a satisfactory boating stage. Naturally the utilization of the Celilo Canal increased the amount of commer cial shipments routed through the Cas cade locks, though monthly reports do not indicate the fact, because during 1914 there was such an amount of buildintr material of various kinds sent from Portland for the Celilo Canal work, and as it passed through the Cas cade locks it was counted in the ton naare, accomodated. The 1814 showing was 43.904 tons, which included all freight for points above the Cascades, though last year the total was 40.997 tons and confined to a material extent to commercial busi neHS. Free locks Are Stimulus. Just the reverse condition existed at the Oregon City locks, the 1914 busi ness being 1004 passengers and 6623 tons of freight, while last year close to 13,000 passengers and 55,000 tons of freight went through. The Increase is attributed to the fact that the locks were made free April 26, 1914, when taken over by Oie War Department through purchase from the Portland Railway, Light & Power Company, and Improvement work that followed soon after, as the Government began dredg ing to provide a foundation for a con crete dividing wall to separate Gov ernment property from that of the corporation adjoining. Men and mater ial were moved since and added to the regular steamboat traffic has been the use of the locks and canal by launches and other pleasure craft, which lock through in nurribers during the Bummer season on week-end trips.
