Declaring he la- the victim or tne charms of his 73-year-old bride, John Coleman, a well-known Eugene cap italist, aged 79 years, sought to re cover his love and Incidentally $22,000, alleged to have been bestowed upon his bride of tvtap years. His grounds for di vorce are the claims that undue in terest was brought to bear upon him at the time he was an inmate of a Cal ifornia home for the aged by the head of the institution, now his wife. He married her in San Diego in 1912. Coleman and his wife have figured in the courts considerably. He recently sued the California institution for the aged, seeking to recover gifts involv ing thousands of dollars on the grounds of undue influence. According to his testimony, Coleman did not propose marriage to Mrs. Coleman, but he said they were mar ried because he lacked courage to an swer in the negative when she asked him. "When will we be married?" Mrs. Coleman said they were mar ried upon the request of Mr. Coleman, and as an inducement he offered her all of his property if she would help him out of a suit which was then pend ing against him. more than last year. More than half the timber sold from Government forest reserves during the fiscal year 1915 was in forest reserves in Oregon, ac cording to the annual report of For ester Graves. His report shows a to tal sale in Oregon of 544.73.000 feet for $1,629,041, while the total sales' from all reserves was 1,069,678,000 feet, valued at $2,850,098. The report further states tnai tne average price of stumpage disposed of in commercial sales during tne year WOMAN, 68, LOSES SUIT Jury Rules In Favor of Defendants Over Housework Wage Reductions. When Mrs. Herman Hoffman let the laundry 'out she reduced the wage of Mrs. Anna Conrad, domestic, from $3 to $2 a week; later an assistant was employed for the housework, and there was a further cut of $1 a week in Mrs. Conrad's wage. Mrs. Conrad alleged in ber suit and on the stand yesterday in the trial of the case that the reductions were to be put by as a caving for her by the Ho'fmans. The latter, however, testi fied that they had given Mrs. Conrad, who is 68 years old, a good home and also lightened her work accordingly. The case occupied most of yesterday In Circuit Judge McGinn's court. The jury In the afternoon brought in a ver dict for the defendants Hoffmans. The amount sued for was $410. One of the most brilliant society events of the season was the annual ball given Saturday night by the New port Commercial Club. The clubrooms were tastefully deco rated with festoons of flowers, holly and evergreen, and the large crowd present passed a most enjoyable even ing'.
