Order Arrregalea S.200.000 Toaada aad Repreaeata Talaea ef 1 75.000. Mre Sale E x pec ted. LOS ANGELES. Nor. -II. (Special.) A largo Kuropean war order wa placed In Lo Angeles recently, when r. E. Harris Company, of thla city, supplied th New York representatives of Knrland and Franca with 40.000 bag of California bean. A each bag- con tatna 10 -pounds of tan. the total amount necessary to fill the order ag grrratea 1.200.000 pounds. The greater portion of th shipment will consist of pink beans, which are grown only In this state, and the balance will be made up of small and large white beans. The total value of the order Is In the neighborhood of I ITS. 000. Due to the destruction of tha major part of the Michigan crop this season, the supply of beans In the United Mete has shrunk to Insufficient pro portions, with resultant high price. Th California crop wii the only one normal In size, as the New York crop also suffered as the result of Inclem ent weather this Summer. The California grower will receive tha most direct benefit from this war order, as they have been holding their stocks for higher price ever since the crop ws harvested. Further war orders should foUow for California products, not only beans, but rice, dried (rult and other food commodities grown In this state. Tha total amount of all varieties of beans raised In California this year totaled 1.3SO.00O bar. Of this amount 700.000 bigs were pink beans, 200.000 mail while and 1SO.00O large whites. Forty thousand bags will cut into the supply on band considerably, and price for pink and smalt white are expect ed to advance IS to 2S cent a hundred welrht at the result of thl one order. Mr. lisrrls declared that a good por tion of the order was filled in South ern California and the balance was bought In th Sacramento and Stockton districts and In San Francisco. "War business has awakened our local trade to new life." said Mr. Harris, "and If the farmer does not get too exalted an Idea of the value of his product, everyone In California engaged In the production and distribution of food staples should make money, and lots of It, tbl Winter. Hean prices are higher today than for many years, and I would not be surprised to see quota tions rise lo figures never before re corded In the history of tha Industry." (Special.) J. II. Bloedel, president of the West Coast Lumber Manufacturers' Association, In a statement Issued here, reviews lum ber conditions with optimism, but says the situation must be carefully hsndled and that an advance of 12 a thousand feet I needed to put the manufacturer and the people in line Xor prosperity. Mr. bloedel aald: "The underlying fact In reported im provements In t.'.e lumber business Is that the outlook for enjoyment of belter time In the near future Is better than It has been since the beginning of the war In Europe. Much has been said and written locally about im proved condition and advancing prices. "The well-founded optimism that lumbermen are enjoylnr come from a knowledge of sound biutlc condition that will make for better price when the hnring demands becomes a reality inatrad of an expectation. . "That the lumber manufacturer should handle the present situation In telligently I of a much Interest to the people of this section generally aa it Is to the manufacturer himself. Ills prosperity In th lumber business means prosperity to all. Any taperai Inr of mills st nlrht will tend to over production, with it conetuent adverse effc-t, and thla practice should be dl rourared. In thla our local press should be very careful about circulating ex aggerated report of mill starting up and other mills putting; on double shifts. . "It Is a fsct that an advance of 13 per thousand feet In average selling prlrea Is yet needed to bring people a fair return In value for their asset, th forests, and to return to the manu facturer a fair Interest rate on his In vestment ln manufacturing plant." EXPANSION ERA EXPECTED Portland Banker Declares Labor Is Scarce and Points Oat Advan tage That Will Follow When Railroads Can Get Funds. Emery Olmstead. vice-president and general manager of the Northwestern National Bank, got back last week from a trip through the East and a visit to the exposition) at San Francisco. Mr. Olmstead was radiatinr optimism when he returned. He said that for the first time in four years the New York bankers actually are feeling confident of the future, and he has been In New York at least once a year in the four. He points out that the New York banks are bulging- with gold, and that, on the top of this. Europe owes this country 11.500.000.000 over and above the volume of American securities held in Europe. "The money In the bank of this country belongs to the people qt this country." says Mr. Olmstead. "but with characteristic American thrift and shrewdness they will not be content to let Jt stay in the banks. They soon will be seeking Investments. This means that the United States Is about due for an era of expansion and development the like of which has not been, seen in a long while. I be lieve this situation will be highly beneficial In the West, for the railroad soon will be able to get the money that they so much need on reasonable term and for long; periods. "If tha railroads are able to finance themselves on an economical basis they will spend money In developing- the West." Mr. Olmstead reports that labor actually Is scarce In some parts of the F.ast, and that the labor shortage threatens to become a serious one If It I not soon remedied. Many men have left the country to Join the European armies. FARMERS TO WORK ROADS Agreement Ileached With Commis sioners at Walla Walla. WALLA WALLA. Wash., Nov. II. (Special.)
