Frateinau Orders Plan Excursions. .SeverJ excursions for various fraternaj organizations are being ar ranged by the Southern Pacific. The first is Scheduled for next Saturday, when alout 40 Knights of Pythias will journey; in a special car to Silverton, i-cturnl.tg the next night. On Sunday, a part of Knights of Columbus will leave Portland for McMinnville by the regulai 8:45 o'clock morning train. Thev ivill return the same night in a special train. About 150 Knights of Colunous are to- go from Salem to the McMirnville celebration the same day in a Ipecial train. On Saturday, May 15 a Selegation of Portland Klks num berinr about 200 will leave Portland in file cars for Salein. M. ecrist, vice-president and general manager of the Pacino Fruit Express Company, the affiliated company of the Union Pacific lines which handles ship ments of fruit and other' perlshible ' .goods in refrigerator cars from this section, was In Portland yesterday. He left Portland last night for Eastern Washington to look over the prospects for this year's fruit crop and to pre pare to handle It. He will be in that territory four or five days. Mr. Secrist, v whose headquarters are in' San. Fran cisco, Is traveling in his private car. Sierra Nevada. $5003 Asked in Slander Suit. Robert Ireland, manager of the Port land Pure Milk & Cream Company, yes terday was sued for $3000 by Edward G. Weber, who alleged that Mr. Ireland had accused him of stealing butter. The Blander ssuit grew out of an alterca tion on sApril 30, when Mr. Ireland Is said to have told Weber that he was short some butter and that he believed Weber had tstolem it. Several people, a policeman among them, were present at the time, and Weber alleges that his reputation was damaged seriously by Mr. Ireland's charge. Kkwpokt Spboial Trains Announckd. The opening of the Summer beach season is almost at hand. Beginning next Sunday, it was announced yes terday by the Southern Pacific Com pany, a special train will leave Albany for Newport each Sunday at 7:30 A. M., arriving at Newport at 12:15. Return ing, the train will leave Newport at 6 o'clock, arriving in Albany at 10:45 1. M. Later in the year, a special sleeping car will go from Portland on the train leaving here at 1:3(1 o'clock in the morning, to connect with the beach train. TVSRTAU Cl.BBK MAKKS RECORD. A clerk in the Portland Postoffiee, Frank A. Tarrant, has made what Postmaster Myers declares is a remarkable record for efficiency in distributing mall. In n examination test yesterday, in which Mr. Arant had to throw 1432 cards into 47 separations, he not only made a per fect score, but finished the work, in 23 minutes. This is an average of 65.09 letters a minute. For a Postoffice clerk to flek up, read and correctly distribute one. letter a second is considered a high standard of efficiency. Men's organizations of other churches of the city were in at tendance. Woman. Ill, Needs Aid. A deserted woman, 45 years old. Just released from the hospital and unable to take care of herself, is in charge of the Associated Charities. The Charities needs S10 to cover the expense of her care during convalescence. She wii appear in two plays while in Portland. "Tha Marriage of Kitty" tonight and Friday night and "Nearly -Married-' on Sat urday afternoon and night. "The .Marriage of Jvtttv is saia Dy many to be her greatest comedy suc cess and "Nearly Married" is an American farce by Edgar Selwyn. In "The Marriage of Kitty" she first scored as a light comedy comedienne. By many this play- ia considered her most important. A diversity of opin ion is responsible for the double bill while in Portland. Club Plans Recreation Park. The Harrimaia Club proposes to make a recreation park for the use of employes ef the O.-W. R. & N. and the Southern Pacifio Company on the South. Port land bottoms. The tract of land to be used, which is about one mile long and 800 feet wide, has been given over to the railroad workers for this purpose and plans for its improvement are bet ing made. It is expected to erect a clubhouse, establish a golf course, tennis court, athletic field, baseba.ll dia mond and other facilities for sports, while the adjacent river front will be used for swimming and boating. Soko to Advertise Portland. "Ten Thousand Miles Away." a song written by Charles A. Vivian, founder of the "Klks." and arranged by Ltfiura R, Downey Bartlett, a Portland woman, prominent in clubs and musical circles, is to be sold at all music stores. It has a breezy, lyric charm, and will be a special sort of an advertisement for Portland. Mrs. Bartlett ia a life-long friend of the writer of the words and air. Her arrangement of the music has received special praise from well known musicians. St. Johns Youth Dies Nkar Salxil Arkie Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Anderson, living on Richmond street, in St. Johns, died Monday on a farm near Salem, where he had been for several months on account of failing health. Death was due to tuberculosis. He was 20 years of age. and a graduate of the James Johns high sotiool. He took a course in Stanford ' University and two years' work of th Oregon law school. He is survived by his parents and one sister. Miss Reco Anderson. Y. M. C. A. Preparrs for Mothers' TJat. Preparation for services for Mothers' day next Sunday are being made by R. K. Randall, religious work director of the Young Men's Christian Association. There will be a 9 o'clock breakfast served by mothers, at which dormitory men and other members of the association will be present. Toasts will be given. A buffet luncheon will be given at night. Special services will be held at 3:15 o'clock. Spanish-American- Society to Meet. The Hispano-American Society of Oregon will meet tomorrow in Hall H, Central Library, at 8 o'clock. Plans will be discussed for a regular schedule of work for future meetings. John E. Trant, attached to the Britih Consulate in Portland, will deliver an address on "The Modern Literature and Drama of Spain." AH interested in the Spanish language will be welcome. Widow of W. X. Hutchinson Sought. The widow and daughter of W. N. Hutchinson, of Riddle, Or., whose body was found in the forest six -miles east of Riddle several days ago, are being sought in Portland by the police. They were last heard of in this city. Coroner Jewett, of Dug las County, informed De tective Captain Baty. Mr. Hutchinson disappeared 18 months ago. Spokane Boy Arrested. Roy Avery, of Spokane, aged 17, was arrested by City Detectives Hyde and Vaughn yes terday on the, charge of stealing a bicycle. The young man, who has only been in Portland two weeks, was en deavoring to sell the wheel at a second, hand store. It had been stolen, from a grocery store at Burnside and Larra bee streets. Gra ham Browne, an estimable actor, and her own company. She Is under the management of John Cort, who is do ing his best to give the West- as good as the East has. This is the first Coast-to-Coast tour Miss Tempest has made. It also is the first time she has brought a distinctly American play.
