THE MORNING-. . OREGOXIAX, FRIDAY," JUNE. 5, 1914. 21 COFFEE TRADE BIG Advancing Prices Go Heavy Movement. With BRAZILS ARE UP ONE CENT Sun Francisco Market Active at Higher Scale of Quotations. Local Roasters May Soon Raise I4st Prices. Sine ' the last report the has been great movement In coffee throughout all the markets of the world. Since the begin ning of April, the Brazil market has been gradually advancing; and today the advance amounts to 1 per cent per pound on all grades. As previously stated, the advance on high-grades, owing to their scarcity, (ls much greater. There is no certainty yet as to what the outcome of the Brazil crop will be, but th3 crop Is late from two to three weeks, and as Brazil has probably arranged Its financial difficulties, this has enabled the holders to carry their coffee and get the higher prices now prevailing. The stock In Santos and Rio is much less now than at this time last year. The world's visible supply is somewhat greater than It was at this time last year, but good part of this is held in Europe by the valorization committee. No doubt some of this coffee -will be sold this year, but In all likelihood only a small quantity. San Francisco reports the heaviest sales within the last two weeks that they have had in any equal length of time in a num ber of years. Prices had advanced there ac cording to grade from to l4c per pound, and much of the coffee has been shipped to the Middle West, owing to the shortage of fancy grades. There Is always a possibility that the mar ket may ease up a little when new coffees begin to pour into Santos and Rio, but it Is hardly likely, if finances are In fairly good . shape,- that this will cause any particular break In. the market. The present condition of the market on all grades shows an advance of at least 1 cent per pound, and it will probably necessitate a slight advance in the selling price of Toasted coffees, although as yet none of the manufacturers have advanced their prices. HIDES ARE FIRM, BUT SLOWER TO SELL Eastern Tanners Are Displaying Small In- terest In Market. The local' hide market maintains a gen erally firm undertone, but trading is not very active.' ' Calfskins are the only weak feature. In the East, according to mail reports, country hides are steady to firm for all varieties, but trade is quiet. Tanners are showing very little Interest, but on the other hand, supplies are small, not only in the larger market centers, but throughout all country districts as well. At Chicago there is a steady call for packer hides, particularly late salting native steers and cows and light average branded hides. Prices remain generally strong, with full rates paid on latest sales and May salt ing native steers and all-weight native cows of current and future takeoff well sold up. The demand centers on .light average stock and late takeoff, and an advance of Uc has been paid for May native steers, several lots selling up to 18ic. On the whole, branded hides are not in the demand that native stock is. - z. CANNERIES TAKING STRAWBERRIES Local Market for Shipping Stock Is linn. Cantaloupes Arrive Green. The strawberry market was firmer yes terday. The canneries are taking the sur plus. . and there was a shortage of good shipping stock. Prices were 20 cents higher on the early growers' market. Shipping uerrles brought $1 on the street. Local rasp, berries were received and sold at i50 a crate. 'A. car of cantaloupes arrived by freight, and like the first car the fruit was green, l'rlces ranged from 4 to S4.50. Another car will arrive today and a car is also due Sat urday. Eight cars of bananas were unloaded, four or them trust fruit, and four from the op position. A car of Florida tomatoes arrived in bad order. The first car of Mississippi tomatoes lias been ordered out and will leave Crystal Springs Monday. It is probable that only one car of Mississippis will be brought to Portland this year, as the California season is early and tomatoes are about ready to ship from that state in car lots. A car of California yellow onions was re ceived and a car of red onions from Red Bluff will be in today. A car of Garnet Chiles is also due this morning, making the fourth car tnls week. KNGTilSH HOPS MAKE GOOD START Vines' Have Strong Stand and Are Healthy. Belgian Conditions. The English hop crop has made a good start, according to the Kentish Observer of May 21, which says: "From our own Inspec tion of a large number of Kentish hop plan tations and from reports to hand from growers It Is evident that the plants have made an exoellent start, generally speak ing. The bine is coming away very strong and healthy and gives promise of doing ex ceedingly well. In a few places some fly have been seen.' A letter from Alost,' dated May 16, says of the Belgian crop: "The weather has been favorable to the growth and the further development of the hop plants, which are seven to nine feet high: In the Alost dis trict five to six feet, Alost hops are a later variety. I made a tour yesterday ana found some aphis fly here and there, but untu now mis visitation is of a sporadic character. It has, however, given some more confidence to the holders and the contract market has become slightly firmer; deals for September-October being Ss to 10s worth more money." SALES OF OREGON WOOL AT BOSTON Manufacturers Less Disposed to Operate at Higher Prices. Among the sales of new Oregon wool on the Boston market, according to advices received, was a quantity of fine staple at the clean basis o( E8 to 60 cents. Some dealers are disposed to hold out for 61 and 62 cents. Oregon half-blood Is quoted there at C7 to S8 cents and three-eighths at 48 to 00 cents. The Boston Transcript says: "Some quarters report less eagerness by mills to take Vie new wools at prices which niust be asked to allow a profit on the late purchases. Manufacturers are In a very difficult position. It Is reported that 'large contracts have been recently placed on the other side for tops and yarns, while import tatlons have been steadily Increasing. As the season progresses the competition from abroad becomes more pressing. The coming lightweight season Is likely to see an active Hght for the control of American markets." BUTTER STOCKS CLEAN CP WELL Price May Hold at Present Level All This - Week. The bntter market was steady. Prints and cubes are being cleaned np at current quo tations and there may be no change in the market before the hot, dry season arrives. The bottom prices of the year have no doubt been seen, and the next change will he npward. Cheese was steady at the old Urioe. Supply and demand are even In the egg saarkst and price are quoted as formerly. r-omiry receipts wars ea a liberal scale and the demand was fairly good. Hens sold generally at liH cents. Speculation suffered today from lack of stimulus and the stock market waa a dull' affair. Nevertheless, there was a good undertone and a degree of improvement eventually was achieved. The inquiry came principally from pro fessional traders and outside interest lan guished. During the early session, the mar ket was held back by weakness of New Raven and Lehigh Valley, , which again proved to be susceptible to pressure. They began to recover before noon. IUMPER CROP FORECAST SPECULATORS TCBS BEARS IN WHEAT MARKET, ' Enormous Yields Promised In Nebraska, Kanssus and Oklahoma Rust Scare Vanishes. CHICAGO, June 4. Extraordinary promise of a bumper crop in Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma had much to do today with caus ing speculators to turn to the hear side in wheat. The dread of a black rust scare flattened out and cables were disappointing to the bulls. Closing prices were steady, but awtoc to liltoc under last night. Corn showed a net decline of 34 c to 34lo and oats of o to c In provisions th outcome varied from Z34C off to a like advance. Favorable weather over the entire do mestic Winter and Spring crop regions put the wheat market under considerable selling pressure. The bears had a further advan tage in the fact that Liverpool quotations showed no response to yesterday's advance on this side of the Atlantic. Besides Okia- oma dispatches said that although rust spores were manifest, no damage had yet become acnaxsAi, frceaaou sX l'Cgsr world shipments were reported and there were welcome rains In the Canadian Northwest. , Heavy and cheaper offerings from Argen tina put the corn market under Dresaure.
