"The crop generally having been grown Iinder such trying circumstances It la rather lltricult to estimate what tha yield may be hrougbout this country, as the hops gen- (rally appear to be tn three grades and .omlng down abort of expectation every where, but, so far as our opinion goes, we cannot put it at mora than 300,000 cwts." WITHDRAWALS OF SUGAR ARE LARGER Trade Expected to Shew Improvement in Near future. The position of the sugar msrket at the present time is a fairly steady one, ac cording to mail advices from New York which say: "The demand for refined sugar this week continued In moderate volume so far as re gards placing of new contracts, but a much better feeling developed before the close as it waa reported that withdrawals showed some Increase and that second sugars were practically cleaned up. It was. therefore, thought that distributors will not be able to defer tha placing of new contracts much longer and the general belief aeema to be that business will show Improvement within the near future. "It will be noted that while receipts at Atlantlo ports are considerably less than last week or last year at this time, meltings are larger than for the aame meek in the two pravkiua years. Refiners apparently are in a favorable position as regards raw ma terial, stocks being placed at 211.054 tons, as against 118.064 at tbia time last year and 105.&94 in 1S1L Quotations are un changed, but firm on the basla of 4.85 for standard granulated in barrels." Gresham Grange refuses to accept the new ratine; which the Judges hav made for the seven gransres which made exhibits at the recent iiultnomah County Fair, held at Gresham, and threatens to take the matter into court The new score changes all the premi ums that were awarded the seven granges in the first place except the Rockwo&d Grange. The original rating rave Russellvllle Grange first prize; Falrvlew, second; Gresham. third; Ev ening Star, fourth; Rockwood, fifth; Lents, sixth and Pleasant Valley, sev enth. The new rating reverses all this and places the seven granges as follows: Fairview, first prize. $225; Russellville, second, $200; Kvenlner Star, third, $175: Gresham, fourth, $150; Rockwood, fifth; Lents and Pleasant Valley Granges, sixth, each to receive half of. $175. The other Granges have accept ed the new rating. Russellville, which got the first prize, congratulated Fair view on its being moved up to first place In the contest. This revision of the first awards came as a surprise to the Grangers, although the places the seven Granges were given In the first place were not considered entirely fair. How the first ratings were made that proved wrong is not known. The directors will try to effect a settlement with Gresham Grange at the meeting this week, with the cool nights firmer market soon. LONDON IS BUYER Attitude Toward Wall-Street Market Is Reversed. FLUCTUATIONS IN STOCKS Sharp Gains at Opening: Followed by Reaction Rally Just Before Close Cuts Down Losses Bonds Are Irregular.- NEW YORK, Sept. S5. Stocks moved up ward brlsklv in the first hour of trading to day, but before the morning session was half over the early gains had been cancelled. ?ne market thereafter was heavy, with substan tlal net losses In many cases, which were cut down by a rally Just before the close. The effect of tariff and currency leglsla tlon. damage to crops and the Fall demands upon the money market are to be reckoned with at home, while the financial situation at the great European centers still arouses uneasiness abroad. London's attitude toward this market was reversed over Jiight, and today almost many shares were purchased by London as were unloaded yesterday. A few stocks were especially weak. Peo- nle's Gas. recently an especially strong tea- ture, dropped nearly 4 points on denial of reports that the corporation waa to aosoro another lighting company, but later re covered its loss. Bonds were irregular, with signs of waning interest in the prominent issues. Total sales, par value. $1,525,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. CLOSINO STOCK QUOTATIONS. Reported by J.
