ESTERLY'S RIGHT DOUBTED Defense In More to Oust Saloons on Front and Jefferson to Flgltt. Attack upon the power of Governor West to employ special counsel In fur- therance of hl cleanup campaign Is forecast as a preliminary to the pro ceedings having for their purpose the ousting of three saloons in the Oregon Klection station at Front and Jefferson streets, held by the Governor to be puhlio nuisances. The form of the proceeding, will be an objection to the appearance of At torney H. M. Estcrly. the Governor's special prosecutor, on the srround that the suit properly should be conducted by the District Attorney or the Attorney-General. - The objection Is not well taken, holds Mr. Esterly, who point out that the Governor has statutory authority to employ special agents to enforce the law in cases where it Is not being done ..- the local authorit.es. Also, as the suit is a civil one. it is said that the state has many precedents for employ ing special counsel. LABOR fOR LOVE IS REAL lan Goes to Much Tronble to Get License for Friends. A young man who sitrnea bis name as Ralph Mee-hlinc caused considerable merriment in County Clerk Field's office yesterday when he appeared to cet a mare-tase license for a couple of his 'friends. On being irssurexi that if he swore to their qualifications to enter into marital bliss it would not be necessary for the prospective bride or Itroom to appear he fouml ho didn't know their aires or exact artdresses. He went out and returned In about an hour with this information. Deputy County Clerk Noonan then handed him a slip on whi-h to write the names of those for whom the license was, desired: "By gum." he said, "that's right. T suppose I do have to have their names." and he atrain left the ofTice' to get this information. He returned and secured a license to wed for W. C. La Roy and Margaret Behreng, the address of both of whom was given as 131 tj Union avenue. ' -v. TESTIMONY WE.GHS TON Land Suit Afxalnst Southern Paeifie Goes to Supreme Court.
