Tha carriers conferred with the view of preparing tariffs to meet the orders of the Commission in case they are 'up held by the Supreme Court. In the "back haul" cases the carriers contended that the time between the data tha order waa issued and January 1. when tha new ratea were to go into effect, was too short. Mr. Robinson Is more firmly con vinced than ever that Portland's su premacy as a commercial center, by reason of Its advantageous position on a water grade, la more firmly estab lished than ever In the eyes of tha carriers and rata officials. F. STROBEL FILES REPLY M I SMAJT AGEMENT OF AFFAIR'i OP HOP BRA V DENIED. He Declares He and Mrs. Baren stecher Can't Art re and Asks That Property Be Sold. Frederick Strobel has filed his answer in the Hof Brau receivership rase, in which he denies all the allega tlons made by Mrs. Barenstecher, says It is Impossible for him to get along with her, and asks that the property be sold, as he believes no business can long prosper In the hands of av re ceiver. "For many years the late Charles Barenstecher and I were associated and were always the best of friends and fairly successful In our business," said Mr. Strobel. "When he was in falling health, we deemed It best to In corporate, so that In the case of the death of either the business might con tinue without Interruption. We were equally interested In tha Hof Brau and also In some real estate. so two corporations were formed, the Hof Brau and the Strobel-Barenstecher Land Company. This was done May 10, 1910, and Charles died the latter part of June. By a resolution of the board of directors, either of us was au thorised to manage the business, with full powers. "Before Incorporation both of us had devoted our entire time to the business and divided the profits equally. After that, owing to Charles' illness and death, the entire management devolved upon me; it took long hours and hard work, but continued to be successful, as a statement of the business shows a profit of over S24.000 from May 10, 1910, until December 8. 1911, for which I drew a salary after Charles' death of $250 a month, which I claim is reason able for the services rendered, only one-half of which was charged against Mrs. Barenstecher. Of course. I realize that I cannot legally rlx my own salary, but I am satisfied that there is no responsible business man In Port land but what would say that I was entitled to compensation for managing the corporation, and taking In to con sideration the volume of business done and the results thereof, that the amount claimed by me was reasonable. "This is the money I have been ac cused of appropriating wrongfully to my own use. The other items are in significant In amount and were due either to errors in bookkeeping or petty disagreement as to what is prop erly chargeable to expense account. All of these matters I am more than win buifiiiii. i" uv .aoii, "! shall cheerfully abide the result. i r . i "V:- - r have welcomed the bringing of her uit, was glad to have a receiver ap pointed and have some one to decide hat we were wholly unable to agree upon. "There never waa any resolution passed by either corporation that wa were to act without salary and no agreement of that kind was ever made orally or otherwise. "After Charles' death. F. J. Alex Mayer, a competent business man. was executor of his will and our relation ship was amicable at all times. I am sure that he will verify the fact that I turned over to hira all the books and papers of both corporations, of which he made a thorough examina tion and found everything straight, with the exception of a few errors In bookkeeping (which were not made by me), and of such insignificance that he said to leave the books as they were, as the errors were sometimes in my favor and sometimes against me. He had access to the books at all times and being an expert. I was glad to have him go over them as often as he would. "I consulted with him about the manner of conducting the business, and everything waa satisfactory, and he made a complete statement to Mrs. Barenstecher. Before relinquishing the executorship, Mr. Mayer called a meet ing at his office for tha purpose of electing a third director to have the number required by law, but Mrs. Barenstecher refused to act. From that day until the appointment of a re ceiver, it was one continual disagree ment, and as each of us hold one-half of the stock of both corporations. nothing could be done. I offered to buy or sell to Mrs. Barenstecher, or sell to a third party, and divide the proceeds, all of which proposals were rejected. It Is therefore necessary for recourse to the courts to separate two interests that dislike each other and consequently should not be In business together. So far as the allegations in her complaint reflect on my character. am willing to leave that to the judg ment of anyone in Portland who knows me, after almost a lifetime spent m business in this city. I am financially responsible and more than willing to abide by the decision of the court." PORTLAND'S DEPOSITS GAIN FAR MORE THAN SEATTLE'S. Orecon Metropolis to Lead All Northwest In Year If Increase Continues Comparison Made. Within a year Portland bank de posits will be the heaviest in the North west, If the present rate of compara tive increase continues. Ever since record of banking statistics was kept Seattle has outranked Portland for the reason that the small towns and cities of Western Washington. which are more numerous than those of Western Oregon, did their banking through Se attle. All the lumber shipped out of that territory waa paid for through the Seattle banks, necessitating heavy bal ances by timber Interests and sawmills. On September 1 of this year Seattle's deposits were more than is.ooo.ouu in excess of those In Portland. Now they are less than S5.000.000 greater. Port land bankers declare that the gap be tween the two cities has been narrow ing gradually In the last few years. They look for It to be entirely wiped out and for Portland to take the lead before the end of the cryning year. The following figures show not only the comparative gain made by Portland's deposits, but also-by Its loans and dis counts: Seattle. nenoelta. Letrl and DIs.
