Walla Walla and Eastern Washington will have a special, while additional trains dally will run from both Eastern and Western Umatilla County. Cowgirls Come, Too. Main street. Pendleton, Is crowded with galloping, hallooing cowboys from all over the Northwest and particularly from Central Oregon. They are here to enter various contests. More than BO are entered In the bucking horse con test. Picturesquely-garbed cowgirls may be seen astride plunging bronchos, more than a dozen being enrolled for various contests. One of them, Mrs. Dell Blanchett, has promised to ride a bucking broncho, and If she succeeds will be the first woman ever known to ride a wild horse "straight up." Although every hotel In the city Is rrowded the accommodation committee pf the Round-Up announces that it Is able to place 6000 additional visitors In private juartera Virtually every Pendleton citizen has donated one or more rooms for this purpose. Try-outa were In progress all day at the Round-Up stadium, the scenes as eowpunchers were tossed here and there being thrilling and spectacular. John Spain, of Telocaset, who brought to Pendleton the largest string of wild unbroken bronohos, has posted a bet ot 2 to 1 In thousands that there Is not a mas In the Northwest who can ride straight up on "Hotfoot." the most vicious of his aggregation. Many have tried, but as they yelled the chosen cry of the Round-Up, "Let 'er buck!" they shot alrwards or earthwards. But they don't care and In the Round-Up every buekaroo of them all vows he will ride "Hotfoot" or die trying. GARRISON GETS NEW TRIAL Supreme Court Reverses Opinion of Lower Tribunal. SALEM. Or, Sept. 13. (Special.) Frank Garrison, convicted or murder tn the first degree for the killing ot Ray Perkins In Coos County, has been given another lease of life by an opin ion by Justice Burnett. The Supreme Court reversed the lower .court and rends Garrison back for a 'new trial. Garrison asserted his confession was secured under inducements and through coercion, and the Supreme Court .up held this view. Other cases were: Pointer vs. Klam ath Falls Lumber Company, reversed. In an opinion by Justice McBrlde. John son vs. Parshley, appealed from Mult nomah County, affirmed. In an opinion by Chief Justice Eakin. Cole vs. Wil low Creek Lumber Company, motion to reinstate appeal, denied, by en opinion by Justice Burnett. NEGRO SUES THEATER MAN Salem Black Wants $5000 Because He Was Denied Admittance. SALEM. Or., Sept. 13. (Special.) Because he Is a negro and as a result of that fact he, with his wife end son. were refused admittance to the Grand Opera-House here to attend a perform ance of the Georgia Minstrels In .Au gust. E. C Atkinson, through his at torney, Frank Holmes, has filed an ac tion In Circuit Court asking for 15000 damages. It is alleged that tickets had been old Atkinson prior to the performance and that F. L. Waters, proprietor of the theater, violated his contract In re fusing admittance to the negro and his family. YALE GRADUATE AT HEAD Evolutionary Theory to Be Applied In New School Here. A school Is which the evolutionary theory will be applied both In the work among children and In the classes to be conduoted for adults will be opened In Portland in October un der the directorship of William Thurston Brown, B. A of Tale. C E. 8. Wood is back of the movement for the establishment of this private school, and Mrs. Harriet Churchill has been placed In charge of the office which has been opened In the Dak urn building. Adult classes will be held In economics and modern drama. Those Interested in the school will give a concert at the Bungalow Theater October 1. The city has Installed an eight horsepower drill at the rock quarries above town, and it is now working Bight and day getting rock for the 'street paving work which will begin ss soon as the rain stops and the streets are sufficiently dry. Twelve teams have been engaged to haul away the prod uct of the quarriea Water has been secured from the city reservoir, whlok Is located above' the quarries, so that no pumping is required. (Special.) Two children were severely Injured here yesterday. One tot, while playing with others, fell onto a hot stove, pushing the lids to one side and the arms going into the fire. During the excitement a pot or boiling water was spilled onto another child, scalding It so barjly It was necessary to- call a physician. At the Rose yard, a short distance from here, a strike of the pickers has been on for several days, 21.50 per hundred being demanded. The pro prietor insisted that 11 per hundred Is all he can pay. The strikers became riotous and it was necessary to call In five Deputy Sheriffs to maintain peace. One man is In Jail at Independence. The strike Is still on, however. Krebs Brothers have 250 acres of hops yet to pick, but, as some of the crop Is very light, the 800 pickers on hand probably will finish the first of next week, unles rain Interferes. To Illustrate the money-making pos sibilities of the hop Industry when fair prices prevail. Krebs Brothers this year will clean up about $140,000 on 360 acres of hopa They value their farm at $160,000. They will this year have 2500 bales of hopes of 200 pounds to the bale, or 600,000 pounds. At 40 cents a pound the crop will bring $200,000. De ducting $60,000, the estimated cost of producing and getting ready for mar ket, a profit of $140,000 on an original investment of $160,000, almost paying for the farm this year. Monday night several tents were entered and several articles stolen. As the camp grounds are guarded every night by men appointed by the pro prietors, the thieves were apprehended and made to return the stolen articles, and were immediately ordered to pack their bedding and leave the grounds. . EXTRA TEACHERS . HIRED Present Lebanon School Too Small for City's Needs. LEBANON. Or Sept. 13. (Special) The Lebanon publlo schools will open next Monday for the Fall term. Three additional teachers have been em ployed to take care of the lnoreased school population, making a total of 14 teachers in the schools here this year. It Is found that the new $40, 000 building put up three years ago is already too small for all the school children. Three rooms have been re fitted and furnished in the old wooden building. Following are the teachers In. the schools for this year: High school Professor Carl C Baker, Miss Lena Tartar, Miss Francis Judy, Miss Jennie Lilly. Grades Eighth, J. J. Mason; seventh.
