The young men became tired In the afternoon and went to the slough for a swim. Lorraine Laldlaw was trying to wade out to the ridge when the swift current caught him and carried him Into deep water. Dr. Mae .Card welL ROSHLIGIuli SOON MAYOR-ELECT WON'T TALK OP APPOINTMENTS. Found at 6hlphcrd Springs. Many Would-Ile. Orflce-IIoIders Worry Man Seeking llet.t In Seclusion. While his Intimate associates In Portland declared he was quartered at first one and then another of the many Summer resorts all the way from Sea side to Mount Hood. Mayor-elect Rush light for the last ten days has been taking sun baths and Imbibing gener ous quantities of mineral water at Shlpherds Springs. Two miles from Carson. Wash, on the North Bank Railroad. When seen at this resort yesterday. Mr. Rushlight was found greatly Improved physically, although he Is yet far from recovered from his recent severe Illness, resulting from ptomaine poisoning. "If I continue to Improve I shall re turn to Portland Thursday." said Mr. Rushlight when questioned as to his plans. "I am not prepared at this time to discuss any of my prospective ap pointments. I have not burdened my mind with, these matters since leav ing Portland and have been employing my time entirely In seourlng the good rest for which I came here.". However. Mr. Rushlight's rest has not been undisturbed during hla short sojourn at the Washington mountain resorL Despite the efforts of himself and bis confidential political associates and advisers to keep his whereabouts a secret, that he might enjoy a com plete rest and be restored to his usual vigorous self, bis hiding place became known to several of his supporters In the recent municipal campaign two or three days ago and sine then he baa been besieged by not less than a score. They were either seeking recognition for themselves or pleading that some "loyal friend" be remembered when It comas to disbursing the plums, honor ary and otherwise, which the Mayor elect will have to distribute when he assumes ofnee Saturday. July 1. When Mr. Rushlight left Portland It Is probable that not more than three men actually knew where he went. They were: Oeorge L. Baker, John B. Coffey and Waldemar Seaton. Of these. Baker and Coffey have visited Rush light at Bhlpherd Springs. Baker was field-general In managing Rushlight's campaign and probably will be elected President ot the Council when It re organizes under the Rushlight regime. Coffey undoubtedly will be a member of the new Executive Board and will get the chairmanship of the police committee, one of the most Important places In the Mayor's cabinet. Eeveral .ether supporters of Rush 1 it managed to scent the trial to KCarson and thence to Rushlight's re treat and during the last tow days have been sharing the ear of their chief. Among those who have made the pilgrimage to Rushlight's tempor ary residence were: Dr. M. G. McCor- kle. who Is slated for Health Officer; W. H. Fitzgerald, who probably will be one of the representatives of organized labor on Rushlight's Executive Board; It. C Moffatt, representing the Warren Construction Company; Mai H. Pome- roy, well-known proprietor of an East Side billiard parlor; Sam Penny and K. j. Caswell, who are Identified with the liquor Interests. However, Mr. Rushlights troubles are not over so far as receiving appli cations for positions and listening to flattering Indorsements of the differ ent applicants by their friends. If he returns to Portland tomorrow, as It Is his Intention, he may be expected to be hounded hourly by jobseekers for the next ten days unless he retires to ab solute seclusion.
