PORTLAND WOMAH REGRETS MISDEED Edna May Nelson Sorry Seat tle Authorities Put Her in Jail. NEVER INTENDED WRONG In Interview, Following Her Arrest, Woman Declares She Has Learned Her Lesson Well and Hates Life Behind Jail Bars. SEATTLE, "Wash.. Nov. 19. (Special.) Material for a new novel, "a great Ameri can novel." to- use her own words, ia the reason Edna May Nelson, wto also gave the name of Mrs. J. D. Barker, of Port land, gives for procuring goods at local department stores tinker an assumed name. She was arrested Sunday night at the Rainier Grand Hotel as she was waiting in a parlor while hrr room, which had been locked against her. was being opened. "In the first place I didn't realize what I was doing." she said. "I have always tiad a desire to become a novelist and my love for finery had nothing to do with it It was my intention to obtain credit un der an assumed name, pay for the thingf later and then, not mentioning any names, write up the story." Merchants should be more careful In giving credit. -I never Intended doing any wrong and tul'v intended paying tor these things today. November 2. I never bought an hat. as stated. "I have writttcn under both my own name and the name of Glynn, and any one has a right to write under any nom de plume one wishes. "I am writing a book which I think will be one of the great American novels. 1 Io not say this boastingly. but merely to show that I am doing my best to earn an honest living. "People don't consider what I have suf fered. All niv life I have lost everything 1 hold most dear. l,uck Just happened to be turned around. I am alone and my desire is to do what Is right. "Recently a great commotion was raised about salary' 'nan sharks and their meth ods. I Intended making my story along the same line. It would have been a great benefit to merchants and trades peopla alike. I only hope I can make these people understand. The goods I obtained were not of a large amount. "I have learned my lesson well. It Is terrible in this Jail." MRS. NELSOX KXfJWX HERE. Towd as Beautiful Widow With Literary Tendrnclc. Edna May Nelson, booked on the po lice docket Jn Seattle as a literary woman, is a,' welt-known resident of Port land. As Edna May Dupree she figured two years ago in a sensational affair with the late Robert Nelson, aged pro moter of Eastern financial enterprises. Mr. Nelson later married Miss Dupreo. who at that time was not 18 years old. She is a striking brunette, of willowy stature, flashing black evs and a beau t'fully modulated voice. She easily made friends and her charming air of inno cence and candor disarmed. Immediately following their wedding Mr..and Mrs. Nel son went to New York for a brief visit, and on their return took iiartmenjts on Flanders street. Mrs. Nelson slowly made encroach ments Into the outskirts of society, but al ways! maintained an afTectation of Bo hemianism. After her husband's death, last December, she wore mourning and passed as a rich young widow, saying Mr. Nelson had left her a small fortune and that she lived on. the income. To many people, she spoke of her literary pursuits and gave long outlines of books, plays and various stories she said she had in process of manufacture. Always demure and nulet, she was decidedly pre possessing and was at all times noticeable for,1ier beauty. In July she engaged an expensive suite "of rooms at Wellington Court, and a lo cal firm furnished the apartment hand somely on the Installment plan, as it was later discovered. Gay little parties, with men and women guests, at which Mrs. Nelson preside as hostess, were the rule here, and her gowns and Jewels excited much comment. To the landlady she told an Interesting fahrication of her work as a feature writer and reporter on a local newspaper, and at various times called the attention of the lodgers In the house, as well as the landlady, to articles printed In the paper, which she said she had written. These were never signed. However, when the first month rolled into the second and no rent was forth coming, steps were taken to procure the money from Mrs. Nelson. A rhone mes sage to the paper on which she assertr-d she worked Tcvealcd the fact that no Mrs. Nelson was employed in any de partment, and the landlady at once had Mrs. Nelson's beautiful furs attached for non-payment of rent, amounting In all to On the afternoon of the same day Mrs. Nelson p:iid the bill. laughingly saying she hair just received a check from her publisher, and her furs were re turned to her. Later the furniture firm called for the furnttura and took it away in default of payment. Mrs. Nelson gave out that she was going to a hospital, to undergo sn operation. She went Instead to Seat tle, where she apparently still has the literary bee. "I'LL RETURN," KING SAYS promises Also to Face .Detractors' and Pay His Debts. Herbert B.
