Police Certain Prisoners Are Hard ened Criminals Third Degree Fails to Weaken Them. Edward Roger, and Walter Brennan. the night prowlers who were targets for the fusillade of shot, fired by Patrolman 9-ennes early yesterday morning on Kings Height., continue to remain silent In their cells at the Police Station. Al though subjected to strenuous question ing in the sweatbox yesterday by Chief of Police Cox and Captain of Detectives Baty. they steadfastly refused to throw any light on their antecedents. Neither would they divulge the purpose of their suspicious actions at the scene of the shooting or the name and possible where abouts of their companion. The unsuccessful attempt to crack the safe in the Doernbecher factory Tuesday night, and the daring holdup of Saloonkeeper Lutkcnmeyer, on Union avenue, Wednes day night, are attributed to profession als of the type of the two prisoners nabbed yesterday. That the congressional delegations of Oregon and Pennsylvania should "trade" in the matter of securing ap propriations for the deepening of the channels of the Columbia and W'ilam ette and the Delaware Rivers, respec tively, will be urged by Congressman J. Hampton Moore, of Philadelphia, now In Portland, at 1:15 o'clock this after noon in the green room of the Com mercial Club. The Delaware River runs through Philadelphia and empties into the Atlantic The situation of that city, he declares, with reference to water transportation, is very similar to Port land. Congressman Moore is an expert on waterways and, realizing the similarity of the local situation with that of his own city, has come here to Interest Portland business men in a plan which contemplates mutual assistance In the matter. He will be entertained at luncheon informally today, following which he will deliver the address. Harriman Purchasing Director Here W. V. S. Thorne. director of purchase, for the Harriman system, arrived in Portland yesterday from New Tork. During the day he called on General Manager 0"Brien and General Superin tendent Buckley, from whom he learned the needs of the Harriman roads in this territory for the ensuing year. Mr. Thorne is accompanied by C C Still man and A. I Jonah, who are con nected with the purchasing department of the Harriman system. The party also Includes Prince San Faustino, of Rome, who is very enthusiastic over this, his first visit to the Pacific North west. . AGED WOMAN IS SAVED Taken From Burning Home In Dead of Night With Difficulty. As the result of a fire which origi nated in the home of Mrs. M. J. O'Neil, 760 East Forty-first street early Fri day morning, several lives were Jeopar dized, a loss estimated at 10,000 sus tained and several homes in the neigh borhood endangered. Owing to the lack of fire protection, ' the firemen were compelled to resort to the use of wet blankets in beating the flames into submission. The home of Mrs. O'Neil was totally destroyed with a loss esti mated at 15000 and but J3400 insurance. The home of John Strahal, upon the next lot, was damaged to the extent of 14500, partially covered by insur ance. The residence of A. J. Parring ton. 759 East Forty-first street, was scorched to the extent of $300. The fire was discovered in the kitchen of the O'Neil home shortly after 2 o'clock, A. M., by one of the household who was awakened by the smell of smoke. It was with the ut most difficulty that Mrs. O'Neil, an el derly lady afflicted with deafness, was aroused and carried from the burning building. Neighbors sent in a tele phone alarm to fire headquarters and engine company No. 9 was sent to the scene. POWER OFF, FOLKS WALK CURRENT FROM STATION A FAILS ABOUT 6 O'CLOCK. High Voltage Wires Cross and. Burn Out in Flash, but Trouble Is Soon Remedied. Many thousand people were Incom moded last night between 5:45 and 6:15 o'clock by an accident in substation A of the Portland Railway, Light & Power Company, at Seventh and Alder streets. Two 10.000 volt feed wires supplying this distributing station accidentally crossed In the basement of the building and short circuited, burning up like a flash. As a consequence all the dynamos in the sta tion were put out of commission. Street car service on all lines stopped and lights on tho West Side, north of Washington street, went out. Elevators in the large office buildings were stopped also the tenants having to walk lip or down.
