AGED WOMAN IS SAVED
Taken From Burning Home In Dead

As the result of a fire which origi
nated in the home of Mrs. M. J. O'Neil,
760 East Forty-first street early Fri
day morning, several lives were Jeopar
dized, a loss estimated at 10,000 sus
tained and several homes in the neigh
borhood endangered. Owing to the lack
of fire protection, ' the firemen were
compelled to resort to the use of wet
blankets in beating the flames into
submission. The home of Mrs. O'Neil
was totally destroyed with a loss esti
mated at 15000 and but J3400 insurance.
The home of John Strahal, upon the
next lot, was damaged to the extent
of 14500, partially covered by insur
ance. The residence of A. J. Parring
ton. 759 East Forty-first street, was
scorched to the extent of $300.
The fire was discovered in the
kitchen of the O'Neil home shortly
after 2 o'clock, A. M., by one of the
household who was awakened by the
smell of smoke. It was with the ut
most difficulty that Mrs. O'Neil, an el
derly lady afflicted with deafness, was
aroused and carried from the burning
building. Neighbors sent in a tele
phone alarm to fire headquarters and
engine company No. 9 was sent to the
scene.
