r COURT REFUSES TO SETTLE STRIKE No Injunction to Compel End ing of McKees Rocks Strike Will Be Issued. NO POWER TO INTERFERE First Attempt to Srttl Ijabor Dis pute Through Courts Meets W ith Failure Will Only Enjoin Rioting. PTTTFFt"R, July 20. The first effort ever made In the United States to atop a strike by enjoining both the principals and the Commonwealth failed today when the Common Pleas Court sustained the demurrer of the Pressed Steel Car Com pany to the petition for an Injunction made by l'.:r Public Defense Association of Pitisburjc against the company, the striking employee and the Sheriff of Al legheny County. The court said: "We And this court has no right to compel the company to re-employ these men or to compel the company to operate Its plant again or pay Its men more money or to Install a new wage system." Judges Broun and Ford, however, stated that they would entertain prayers for Injunction against either the Btrikers or the company In the event of further riot ing. STRIKE SETTLED AT BUTLER Both Sides Vlcld When Polish Priest Acts as Mediator. BUTLER. Pa., July 20. The strike which for four days has tied up the Etandarri Steel Car Company's works was settled late today. The 3500 em ployes of the plant will return to work tomorrow. Both sides yielded points. The settlement was effected through the efforts of Kev. father K. Becwezkl of the Polish Catholic Church. The company agreed to take back all of the workmen and consented to a reduction to 10 per cent of the amount delin quent rents taken from the pay en velopes of the men. Father Becwezkl. acting for the strikers, then agreed to abandon the men's demand for an Increase In wages and consented to the company's state ment that It would follow its custom in such matters. OFFER n.TIMATCM AT BUTLER Employes Make Extreme Demands on Standard Car Company. BUTLER. Pa., July 3a This after noon, after falling to get a report of the action Intended by the Standard Car Company on the strikers' proposition to return to work, the men canceled their offer and delivered an ultimatum that the state constabulary must be removed st once, that all strikers now In jail be released, that the company officials treat with the men and give assurances of an Increase In pay as soon as conditions warrant and that the amount taken out of earn man's wages for arrears of rent be reduced from 20 to 10 per cent. The arrears are for the time when the plant was closed. RIOT AT TIXPLATE MILLS One Man Fatally Injured and Strikebreakers Driven Off. NEWCASTLE. Pa.. July 30. During a riot here today between strikers and al leged strikebreakers near the Greer tin p:ate mill. William Able, of Cleveland, was probably fatally Injured. Fifteen men are under arrest. Twenty live more, said to be strikebreakers, are so terrified that they refuse to enter the pant. No Appeal to Government. WASHINGTON. July 20. Instead of appealing to the State Department In an effort to adjust the differences be tween their striking countrymen at Mc Kees Rocks. Pa., and the Pressed Steel Car Company, the Austro-Hungarlan consular officials are to take up the subject with the Pennsylvania state officials. Eieht-Hour Law Causes Strike. MUSKOGEE. Okla.. (Special.) During the past few days Seaside has been full of blanket-carrying men, headed for the Tillamook railroad camps. Many of them are of the rough er sort, and as a result, the city jail is full to repletion. It is reported that an attempted hold-up occurred in West Boarding Moving Car. CENTRA LI A. Wash.. July 20. (Spe cial.) Chester R. Higglns, a well known young man of this city, was Instantly killed Saturday at Palmer, where he had been working in the coal mines.
