Jreman In a corner of the cab, two ,ot the robbers turned thlr attention to the express cars. Making their way from the rear, the two used dynamite and nitro glycerine to effect an entrance. Three explosions took place. Finally the door was blown down and the two rushed In through the smoke, covering O. H. Huff, the ex press messenser. with revolvers. Messenger Tells Story. "By throwing; an electric flashlight Into my eyes they blinded me for a mo ment and covered me with their guns ua they entered the car," said Huff last night. 'They menaced me with their rnn and compelled me t, open the safe. They then took all it contained, a few pmall packages, the value or which I (Jo not know. Apparently disgusted with the result of the nighf s work, they held me up and took aU the change I had, J3.30. One Blackened; One Masked. One of the men appeared to be a Swede, and had his face blackened. The othir waa a tall man, apparently an American, and. wore a, mask. How the other two were dreswed or what mey l.tnked like. I am unable to say. They did not enter the roiulcar at all and after taking tvt lew packages from the express company's aafe, they dropped Off In the darkne.-w and disappeared Tie rot.be rr to strikingly like two stm Hr cases within a few mllea of last night s hold-up within the past few years. Tne methods followed were practically rh. Mime as those followed last night. Howevr. several men -were convicted of complicity in the robbery and were sent to the penlentiary. Officers J.fvt lor Scene. A rpe-lal train, carrying twveral prain flothea men and a squad of uniformed po lice, tn command of a sergeant, left the fnloo Depot for the scene of the hold up a few minutes after 10 o'clock: At the ame time an automofbile. containing number of detectives and preaa repre sentatives, left with bloodhounds. Each party was thoroughly armed and-prepared for a hard man-hunt. Sheriff Stevens' force was among the Erst to take an active part 1n the tiunt and Deputy Beatty accompanied the spe- -!al train to the scene, of the troume. B.n ana ine fr.gineer. Owrge Donlon, remained at the station only a short time, leaving titer In the SDecial car which returned with crew of detective to the. bctm of the robtery. "We. were two miles ' this side of Carney when Donlon and I were startled when we heard the conimano, rhrnw tin tour hands" Turning around, we taw two masked men with guns aimed at u... Behind them was another man without a ma-'k. Will Dunn, what had happened and we went to a fartn hoi:se and telephoned to Superintendent Buckley and the Police Department. We went back to the train and in a few minutes the engine was attached and we Started for Portland. "While I was en deavoring to uncouple the car the express man 1n the car. evidently aware that oomethlng was wrong, hid the money." Pa(-songers Kenialti Cool. Passengers In the coaches took the holdup with great coolnesn," said Vf. C. 1'an ton, of Chicago, who was on the train. Til fact, in the Pullman I was traveling Is we did not know what had happened, and it was only when I heard the explosions that I realized there was trouble in the front end of the train. The whole thing was over before we had fully realized what had happened. The jobbers simply cut off the engine, one baggage car and an express car, moved them ahead abont three or four lengths, I should say, blew up the safes, took what they could carry off. Jumped away In the darkness and probably boarded street cars, and that's about all know of the occurrence. "There was more excitement among the passrngers after they had found out what had happened than when the train bU-rped and the sound of the explosions came to tholr ears. ' Then everybody talked at onoe and It is astonishing what fool suggestions were made. One woman called out In a shrill tone. 'What sort of men are you. anyway;. why don't you grt out and catch those robbers?" " The robbery last night Is identical In nearly every particular wrth the hold-up of a Great Northern train near Spokane na the night of December last, by three masked men. The presence of mind of the fireman alone prevented the loss of about In the express car at the time. He was ordered to uncouple the express and baggage cars from the train and in doing so left one express car en the train. This car held the money. The robbers got practically nothing as the result of the hold-up. but made a clean getaway and were not captured. Train No. 1 Is the Chicago-Portland spe cial and carries heavy malls from The E.wt. At this season of the year the train hrings large quantities of registered mall matter, as well aa heavy consign ments of Christmas gifts, many of them of considerable, value.
