TRAIN HELD UP;
CAR IS LOOTED

Making their way from the rear, the
two used dynamite and nitro glycerine
to effect an entrance. Three explosions
took place. Finally the door was blown
down and the two rushed In through
the smoke, covering O. H. Huff, the ex
press messenser. with revolvers.
Messenger Tells Story.
"By throwing; an electric flashlight
Into my eyes they blinded me for a mo
ment and covered me with their guns
ua they entered the car," said Huff last
night. 'They menaced me with their
rnn and compelled me t, open the safe.
They then took all it contained, a few

One Blackened; One Masked.
One of the men appeared to be a
Swede, and had his face blackened. The
othir waa a tall man, apparently an
American, and. wore a, mask. How the
other two were dreswed or what mey

They did not enter the roiulcar at all

the express company's aafe, they dropped

party was thoroughly armed and-prepared
for a hard man-hunt.
Sheriff Stevens' force was among the

and Deputy Beatty accompanied the spe-
-!al train to the scene, of the troume.

The whole thing was over before we had
fully realized what had happened. The

street cars, and that's about all know
of the occurrence.
"There was more excitement among
the passrngers after they had found out
what had happened than when the train
bU-rped and the sound of the explosions
came to tholr ears. ' Then everybody
talked at onoe and It is astonishing what
fool suggestions were made. One woman
called out In a shrill tone. 'What sort
of men are you. anyway;. why don't you
grt out and catch those robbers?" "
The robbery last night Is identical In
nearly every particular wrth the hold-up
of a Great Northern train near Spokane
na the night of December last, by three
masked men. The presence of mind of
the fireman alone prevented the loss of
about In the express car at the
time. He was ordered to uncouple the
express and baggage cars from the train
and in doing so left one express car
en the train. This car held the money.
The robbers got practically nothing as the
result of the hold-up. but made a clean
getaway and were not captured.
Train No. 1 Is the Chicago-Portland spe
cial and carries heavy malls from The
E.wt. At this season of the year the
train hrings large quantities of registered
mall matter, as well aa heavy consign
ments of Christmas gifts, many of them
of considerable, value. The robbers no
doubt expected to find large shipments of
valuables In the express-car. oui last

che head of Sullivan's Gulch by two
men named Jackson and Williams. The
latter was an cx-convlct and Is believed
to be living now in Portland. Jackson,
at last reports, lived in California.
After their capture, they were tried be
fore Judge Sears and Jackson sentenced
to serve 30 years in the penitentiary
and Williams to S1H years. They served
less than ten years each and were par
doned by Governor Chamberlain.

vast possibilities of the Inland Bnplre
of Oregon, touchln from Vale to Ooos
Bay and from the O. R. & X. railroad
on the north to the Southern Pacific on
the south, constituted the scene of the
orations of today's session of the ldaho
OreRon development congress. Judge
Stephen A. Lowell, president of the or
ganization, and J. C. Turvey, of Burns,
spoke upon this great territory, and the
need of transportation facilities In order
that the- natural resources may be de
veloped. In the evening;. Dr. W. S. McClure dealt
with the livestock Industry, at present
the principal business of the country.
About ISO delegates -from the two states
were In attendance when the session
opened. The little town of Vale was dec
orated for the occasion and the most de
lightful weather prevailed.
Knthuslasm In the cause of develop
ment Is marked. The principal project
being; boosted is the Government Malheur
irrigation scheme.

Khomvakon. president of the Douma. has
not vet definitely followed out the threat
of resigning he made in the course of
an excltinir session of Parliament yes
terday, hut there is every reason to
believe that the matter will be settled
as soon as the minds of the members
cool down. .
M. Khomyakoff did not attend the
Douma today and declined to give out

tions Show Presents Often Sent
to Unworthy Persons.
WASHIXGTOXv Dec. 17. Postmaster
General Meyer today announced that "he
would not renew his order issued In De
cember, lflOT, permitting delivery to charit
able organisations of letters addressed to
Santa Claus."
Numerous complaints have been made
hi- charitable organisations that owing
to the large number of such letters taken
bv the various charuanie organism""
while the order was in force, it was not
possible to Investigate each case . and
that the presents fell into the hands of
unworthy persons. The practice also was
objected to on the ground that It tended
to make begging among the children.
The Postmaster-General has directed
Postmasters to treat the "Santa Claus"
In accordance with those sections of the
postal laws which provide that letters
bearing fictitious addresses shall be Bent
to the division of dead letters, unless the
address of the senders appear upon the
envelopes.
It is estimated that more than
letters are addressed by the children of
the country to Santa Claus annually.
