He described the meeting between the two. said that both he and Kelley were within two feet of the couple all the time that they were together and declared that It would have been Impossible for the wife to have slipped the Derringer to Haas without It being observed by himself and Kelley. Mrs. Myriam Conn, the closest friend ttie ssilant of Mr. Heney had. as. one of the principal witnesses. Mrs. Cohn said that she h:id known Haas for 24 years, that sh w is practic al y his only confidant, and tha: he had p'ten declared that he loved nor. and t.iit her marriage to another '.i:un had blasted his life. She testified that Haas said he was very anxious to get on the Ruef Jury in the Parkside case and he gave as his reason that he hop?d the enforced seclu sion for several weeks or months would cure him of his drink and tobacco habit. The witness said that Haas brooded over hte exposure as a convict by Mr. Heney and told her he intended killing the special prosecutor for it. Henry Ach, chief counsel for Ruef. directed such a rapid fire of ouesiions at him that Gallagher lost his customary composure and plainly shewed the effect of the grilling to which he was being subjected. An incident of the day was the appear ance in the courtroom of a man bearing such a striking resemblance to Morris Haas, the assailant of Assistant District Attorney F. J. Heney, that he immedi ately attracted the attention of the dozen or more detectives and was the cynosure of all eyes. Kelly and John C. Attrklge, the two men detailed to guard the cell of Morris Haas, who shot Fran cis J. Heney and afterward committed suicide. In the complaint It is alleged that a few hours before Haas took his life the officers refused to permit Eurns to enter the cell and examine the pris oner in the interests of the District At torney's office. The hearing was set for November 27. At the same session of the board charges- were preferred against Albert Baker, a Kearney-street saloonkeeper, who is allegej to have -expressed satis faction when he learned that Heney was chot and to have reviled his assistants in the prosecution. It is charged that B niter is an unlit person to hold a li cense to sell liquor. IT They Conld Realize His Desire and Determination Taft Says No Cabinet Position Of fered Any Man. HOT SPRINGS. Va.. Nov. 20. A gen eral discussion of affairs with Senator Scott, of West Virginia, and a visit from Senator Henry T. Davis, of the same state, who- four years ago was the Dem ocratic candidate for Vice-President, were the demands made upon the time of the President-elect. Mr. Scott said afterward with much earnestness that if the business men of the country, large and small, could real ize the qualities, desires and determina tion of Mr. Taft there would be no hes itation whatever in the upward trend of business. I wish you would just say that my Cabinet is not made up or slated. No one has been decided upon for a place In It and no offers of any Cabinet posi tion have been made to anyone.' This was the response of Mr. Taft today to the statement from Minneapolis that Frank B. Kellogg had been invited to become Attorney-General in the Taft Cabinet. An option for an advantageous site for such a building has been secured by the .Chicago Association of Commerce, and a special committee began yesterday the preliminary work of ascertaining the representation desired by merchants of the city. The building and its maintenance aa planned will cost $60,000. although the structure can be enlarged If this scale is found inadequate. It will contain re ception rooms, offices and a big lecture-room. Accuses Pastor Husband. NORTH YAKIMA, Wash., Nov. 30. In a cross-complaint for divorce, Mrs. An drew G. Boyd, wife of a prominent minis ter, accuses her husband of great bru tality, and makes dreadful allegations. She alleges nonsupport and neglect, and asks the custody of their two children.
