PLAN TO ADVANCE PRICES Prominent Firms Make Significant Purchase of the Product In Three of the Pacific Coast States. Hopgrowers and dealers In every sec tion of the United States are Rreatly in terested in a rumor that has gained cur rency to the effect that a combination of dealer, has been formed to corner the available supply of American hops. Wh le it ia only a rumor and may soon be dis proved, the story has an air of plausibil ity and is. to say the least, interesting-. The four larsest hop firms in the coun try are credited with being; in the trust. They are: B. & F. Uhlmann. of New York: IJllenthal Bros., of New York: the IX Clemens Horst Company, of San Fran cisco. Chicago and London, and Klaber, "Wolf & Netter. of Portland and London. These are wealthy firms and could read ily swing a deal of thte kind If they chJ?."- . .k. ,mMr,. It Is said, is to buy up the remaining; 1906 and 1907 hops and the surplus M me i v.v. a soon as a sufficient quantity of the three crops has been secured to advance prices materially. Though this; looks like . - amount Of Capi- a large uflai's - tal required would not be (treat when this trust is compared wnn ot.... . j .unnl es and boost Deen iwraeu iu v i prices. There are only about 25 COO bales of last year's crop unsoia. ; or 13.000 bales of "olds" left in farmers hand. These could be purchased at . ur rent market values, for about ; More difficulty would be experienced in ... .v.. K.iiv nt the coming crettmg noiu . , - crop, but even new hops are not likely to be expensive. The lomi '' , with the crop on the eve of being har vested, stands at 7 cents a pound, and no apparent effort la beln- made to raise values anywhere. Crop Sold In Advance. The Oregon crop, the most important American crop in point of sire, is esti mated by most dealers at from 80.000 to 90 000 bales, fully 60,000 bales of the crop have been sold by farmers In advance, probably most of this quantity to the firms mentioned above. Should the crop come down lighter than expected it would mesn so much less for the "trust to buy. The Washington crop will not figure on 4 the market this year, as it Is very ma i. W . . jt M.Mf.allv all sold about W,ow Daiea. miiw v J 1 r-allfnrnla will- have 60.000 or ' moon hj.lea. of which a very large part has alreadv been contracted for, and a ' good deal of the New fc'ork crop of 30.000 or 36.000 bales was llkSwise sold by the farmers before grown.) At the price at which dealers say the new Oregon mar ket will open, S centn. the unsold portion of the crop, figuring on the minimum yield, can be taken over for about $300. 00 and at the same proportion the crops of the other states can be bought up. Should all the farmers not prove ready seller It Is figured the combination will have enough hops anyhow to carry the deal through. Significance In Purchases. Recent events on the Coast have strengthened the opinion of many deal ers that Buch a scheme is being worked up. Klaber, Wolf & Netter and their affiliated firms, Herman Klaber A Co of Tacoms, and Philip Wolf & Co., of fan Francisco, have been heavy buyers In the three Coast States for the past week. In addition to large purchases Of 1908 Oregon hops, on the baels of 7 cents. Philip Wolf & Co. are said to have bought freely in California, pay ing 7 centa for new hops, S cents for 'Taat year's crops and 1 cent for 1907s. frk.t. intatt mirrhajtea are reported to have been In Mendocino, aggregating 700 bales, at 7 cents. Klaber A Com pany have also bouglit heavily In Washington. Therefore. It is surmised that they are operating as purchasing agents for the combination. If the other firms have done any buying. It has not been made known. For many years hopmen have dreamed of a trust that would corner the supply of this article In the Tilted States, but this Is the first year when conditions for such a combine have been favorable. The 1908 crop is an exceeding short one, the production of the entire Coast thta year being less than that of Oregon alone two years ago. Brewers Carry Reserve. The total American crop will be less than the brewers requirements, and they would soon be entirely out of hops were they not carrying consider able reserve stocks from former growths. Their reserves, however, will not last Indefinitely, and when they get over the scare the Prohibitionists gave them and business Improves in the Spring, some of thera will want hops badly. If everything works out accord ing to the "trust" plan, what Is known In the hop market aa "moving pic? tures," will then begin. As has been said, this is only a ru mor, but -a plauelble one. Herman Klaber. of Klaber, Wolf & Netter, laughed when asked about It yester day. "Yes," he said. "I have heard about this rumor. ' 1 have received letters, even from New York, asking if there was anything In it. I do not say there is no dealers' combination, but if there Is such an organization, most assuredly Klaber. Wolf & Natter are not mem bers of it." The weakest point in the etory, ac cording to many hopmen. Is the linking of the names of these four big firms which In the past have been bitter competitors, some of them not even on speaking terms with each other. Still, these difficulties could be smoothed over when It comes to working a cor ner. BRITISH STEAMER LOST Wrecked Off Grimsby and Five of Crew Drowned. GRIMSBY. Eng.. Sept. 10.
