It is the opinion of the local officials that the grass was set on fire by sparks which came from a freight engine which passed about an hour before the limited and that the burning grass fired the bridge, which was quickly destroyed, leaving no burning embers which would have attracted the attention of the en gine crtw before they reached the place. From the best information obtain able It Is believed that fully 30 were Injured, although but a dozen of these sustained serious hurts. The injured were brought here as soon as a relief train could make the round trip, and a request for medical assistance from Los Angreles was followed by the de parture from that city of Dr. M. H. Morrison, chief surgeon of the Santa Fe, with a corps of nurses. DAILY METEOROEOBlCAXt REPORT. PORTLAND. June 2. Maximum tempera ture. 86 degrees : minimum, 68 decrees. River reading et 8 A.
