Miss Pearl Johnston, aged 23, daugh ter of John E. Johnston, 315 Til lamook street, died at the home of her parents yesterday. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from Finley chapel and interment will be in Rose City Cemetery. . Miss John ston was born in Canada, but had lived here almost all her life and was educated in the Portland schools. SAMARITAN TALK OF PANAMA AFFAIRS Finds Drunken Printer and Takes Him to Police Station. A Chinese Good Samaritan was dis covered last night in the person of Ah Tons, a Chinese laundryman who works in South Portland. On Second street about 15:30 o'clock ,he came across the prostrate body of a man lying half on the sidewalk and half in the gutter. A gold chain dangled from his waist coat, a gold watch was in his pocket, as was plenty of money, and he was drunk. After a moment's thought Ah Fong grabbed the limp form, and swinging It over his shoulder, carried It off to the police station, where he ' confided mod estly to Captain Bailey his story. "Me findee man in stleet. Think him gottee plenty money and gold watch. Flald somebody steal him money and watch so me bling him In. Good night." Captain Bailey thanked the olive colored embryo sleuth, and on searching the unknown found that he had a fine gold watch ard chain and 150 in hia possession. Later he ascertained that the owner's name was O. D. Doehring, that he was a printer, and that he had been having a "time." A charge of drunk was entered. President Congratulates Alplionso. MADRID, May 18. President Roose velt is among the chiefs of state who yesterday cabled congratulations to King Alfonso on the occasion of the 22d anniversary of his birth. Tart and Roosevelt Confer on Secre v tary's Isthmian Trip. "WASHINGTON'. May 18. Secretary of War Taft arrived today from Charleston, where .he landed on his return from Pan ama. He called at the White House at 8:30 tonight and was in conference with the President for some time, discussing various matters in connection with his visit to Panama. Among the matters dis cussed were the coming elections in the Republic of Panama; the selection of a successor to Brigadier-General Macken zie, Chief of Engineers, who is to be re tired; the boundary dispute between Co lombia and Panama, and the situation in general in the Canal Zone. The Secretary announced that he would Issue a state ment in regard to these various matters before the Cabinet. Addresses Portsmouth Voters. District Attorney Manning addressed m large audience In the interest of hia cam paign for re-election at Artisan's Hall, Portsmouth, last night. Mr. Manning's re marks were received with enthusiasm and after he had spoken his allotted 20 minutes, the audience demanded to know more about the Title Guarantee & Trust Company failure and how the District At torney's office secured the depositors against financial loss.
