SAN FRANCISCO, March 12. Machine guns operated by the government forces of Chile in a great conflict with strikers at the nitrate beds and in the city of Iquique, laid 2G00 men low. most of these being killed, according to advices received yesterday by the Norwegian steamer Christian Bors, arriving direct from Chile. BuKiness at Iquique waa paralyzed by the strike. One fracas after another oc curred until soldiers and strikers met in the streets of Tnqulnue in open conflict on January 1. The soldiers opened fire while tha strikers were massed and literally mowed down the men. The laa ter had little opportunity to' fight back, even though they had been armed, the assault upon them was so sudden. A week later, as though by common agreement, the strikers went back to work without the expected advance In wages. It was reported th"at the mine owners will voluntarily Increase the pay of many of their employes. The story coming from San Francisco tit a great conflict between the Govern ment forces and strikers at Iquique, say ing that 3600 men were laid low, evidently Is an exaggeration and incorrect as to the date. A dispatch received from Val paraiso, dated December 2S, stated that according to an official statement the recent encounter at Iquique between ni trate strikers and the police resulted in the killing of 260 men and the wounding of about 60. . This undoubtedly is the same occurrence mentioned in the ad vices brought Into San Francisco by the Norwegian steamer Christian Bors. TOO CUNNING FOR A COUNT Anna :ould Takes Assumed Xanie and Cliangcs Steamers. PARIS, March 18. It became known riere today that Mme. Anna Gould, who sailed yesterday for New York on the steamer Adriatic, booked lier passage under the name of Miller. She had originally taken passage for herself and her children on the Kronpnnz Wilhelm, but changed her plans at the last moment. Although she had the written consent of her former husband. Count Boni de Cas-ti-llane, to take the children out of France, she adopted the ruse of changing steamers and using an assumed name in case the count should attempt at the last moment to prevent the children's departure. Count Boni had been under tbe impression that Mme. Gould and the children wt-ro on board the Kronprlnz Wilhelm and telegraphed his greetings to the children in care of that steamer. Count Boni has issued a letter char acterizing as a piece of buffoonery the suit broucht by Prince dv Sagan. his cousin, accusing him of forging certain letters signed with De Chilean's name and reflect ing upon Mme. Gould. Count Boni de clares that the suit was brought upon the eve of the departure of his children and their mother for America with the pur pose of furnishing the American news papers with matter for sensational articles.
