Navy-Yard Could Employ 1000 More on Cruisers Now Coming and Battleships Next Winter. SEATTLE, Wash., Sept. 25. (Special.) With a number of battleships on the way to Puget Sound and many of them In such a state that considerable work will be necessary at once upon their arrival, the officers of the Puget Sound Navy yard are greatly worried at the scarcity of help at the big Government plant at Bremerton. The officials realize that la bor shortage here will be the most potent to militate against the future of the Bremerton establishment and have asked the Secretary of the Navy to advertise widely through the East for mechanics of all descriptions. There" Is a shortage of 1000 men prac tically at the N;.vy-yard today and the situation is likely to become serious. There are practically 1300 men employed at present and this number could be im mediately increased to 2000 to the benefit of the Navy-yard in view of the expected arrival within the next 30 days of the four big, armored cruisers, the Colorado, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Vir ginia. It is known that the Colorado will - have extensive repairs and alterations made on her while at Puget Sound Navy yard and several . hundred mechanics will be needed for this work. Besides, the Colorado will have an entirely new equip ment of guns, it is said, although the ex act plans have been rigidly kept a sec ret at Washington. Some authorities at the Navy-yard be lieve that 4O00 men 'can be profitably em ployed when once the docking of the bat tleships begin, figuring that the Mare Island Navy-yard, because of its shallow harbor, will be unable to handle any of the great warships. Heads of the works at Bremerton say that, because of the extraordinary high wages paid all class of labor on the Coast, iflaska particularly, by railroad contract ors, it has been very difficult to retain any considerable number of men in this region from which to draw when there is an excess of work. WORKMAN KILLED BY TIMBER John P. Kennedy Struc kon Head While at Work. VANCOUVER. Wash.. Sept. 25. (Spe cial.) John P. Kennedy, a workman em ployed on the Columbia Kiver bridge at Vancouver, was instantly ' killed at 2 o'clock today. Kennedy was working on the false-work that is being put in place for the draw swing. This structure is over SO feet high. There were some loose timbers on the top and it is supposed that the vibrations of the hoisting engine Jarred one of the timbers off. A piece about 12 feet long and 8 by 10 inches on the end, fell and struck Kennedy fairly on the head. His skull was badly crushed and half the bones in his body were broken. Kennedy's home is in Michigan and his body will be shipped there for burial. He was 47 years old. FIVE FLATCARS RTTN AWAY Make Wild Dash Down Grade "and Collide With Engine. VANCOUVER, "Wash., Sept. 25. (Spe cial.) Fiva flat cars belonging to the Northern Pacific Railway Company, broke loose from the train while on spur 19, ten miles above Yacolt. There is a heavy down-grade from the spot where the cars broke loose for 15 miles. The cars started down hill and before they had gone a mile the speed waa teriflc. Oregon. $1.00, $1.50, $2.00 per Day, Word was telephoned ahead to clear the track and fortunately no one was hurt. As the cars n eared the high trestle near Camp 2, they were traveling at the rate of 75 miles an hour, swaying and bounding over the uneven track. As they struck the curve on the trestle, two of the cars left the track and fell 150 feet to the ground. They were smashed to pieces. The remaining three stayed on the track and tore on toward Yacolt. Two locomotives were standing on the side-track. The runaways took the switch and crashed into engine 7 which was the foremost. The other engine was uninjured. Crews were aboard both en gines, but they got oft in time to escape injury. Only a tangled mass of Iron and splin tered wood marks the spot where the run aways and the engine collided. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND. Or.. Sept. 24.
