THE KOKXiyaHQKEGOyiAy, -SATURDAY, 7, 1043. - . 1 . . r MAY TAKE SURPLUS Possibility That AH Potatoes in Oregon May Be Sold. GOOD SOUTHWEST DEMAND Farmers Have Cliancc to Dispose or Their Stocks at Fair Values. Position of Market In the East. POTATOES New Southwestern de mand may take all of Oregon surplus. HOPS Sale to date this week about 2400 bales. BUTTER Local market top heavy. EGGS Volume of business large and prices steady. rOULTRT All kind, of chickens except Springs weak. VEGETABLES Local supply very small. FRUIT Tiro car or bananas on tale today. It is the belief of potato shippers that the "'i"u auppiy in tni state, which now amounts to about 20 per cent of the entire nop. can be diepo-ed of through the South western markets, unless holders advance their prices above what the market will stand. Quite a number of orders came in ycaterday irom rscw and Old Mexico. Texas and Arizona mums, inere in also more inquiry from Northern California, and the- San Francisco nwrket Is picking up and should remain In fair shape, unlets exccMlve supplies are rushed in from the North. It is understood that po tatoes are being well cleaned up in that eec Hon. which will provo a good thing for the flrmnc fi... ... i. - - . . . . ..v., . 4iBU wnun io iook as tr a T larcA narf nf 1.. . . J - " aoing 10 Dc left On thalf lnnr.,1. A. . . - .... .... arc now busy with th.lr farm work, it is not thought that any cxcceslve supply will be rushed to market. "The -movement to the Southwest." said Mc Klnley Mitchell yesterday. 'Vhould pretty Teu wean up the crop In this state. No great advance In prices can be expected, but there will probably be a fair market from now on My idea Is that the California crop will be late in coming on. and all the old potatoes there will be used at home." The potato tltuation is rtronger now in all parts of the United States than it has been at any time this srason. Along the Atlantic seaboard there have been a number of sharp advances, and these have stimulated the mar keta further west. Mall advice Just at hand from Chicago eay: It is admitted that from now on the mar ket will depenl on tho supply of potatoes yet Je't in the growing sections, ir receipts should show up a little heavy for a few- days and let he trade get supplied It is thought price, will go down a little anyway. But it is not ex- pected that the market will ee much decline he balance of tho srason. as it appear to be a foregone conclusion that warehouse stocks hroughout the country are worked down to a clos point. This is true of practically (very potato section where supplies are being :rawn on by the local trad. From September J up to March 29. 5S92 earn were received on this market, as compared with 7228 cam re-cclx-ed during the corresponding period one year ago. This difference furnishes anjara about the business transacted' here tlio pres. -nt season, and when it is considered that nearly every section reports favorable condi tions during the Winter for loading and ship ping it only lends emphasis to the statement that a larger proportion of the crop was - moved during the period indicated the latter i lart of last year and the first part of the present year as compared' with the move ment of potatoes a year ago when more or les trouble existed on account of cold weather and scarcity of cars. What the markVt will or will not do is a hard matter to predict. If it is true that practically all warehouse stock is cleaned up. and it favorable weather should continue for moving the potatoes left, providing they are nf good1 quality, there does not sejm to be much prospect for a decline In prices, but. on the other hand, it U doubtful if the market will go a great deal higher. Price have al leady advanced beyond the expectation of even the "wlae" ones and a number of dealer who are in close touch with the situation admit that they are- surprised at the caper the mar ket has cut. New potatoes will not be mov ing in a way that will bring them In competi tion with old etock at the earlier before the middle of May. and probably later. Some dealers think that unfavorable conditions in the South and Southwest will make potatoes late in thoe sections, and should this opin ion be well founded it Is possible there will be mo montns ana a half left for selling old potatoes. BIG TRANSACTIONS IN HOPS. AbOHt 2400 Bales Bought by Salem Dealer This Week. The facts of the flurry in the hop market this week came to light yesterday. As was surmised, there was a scramble by Salem buyers to get in before the short supply was entirely exhausted, but the volume of deal lngs proved to be much larger than was estimated. Instead of 1000 bales changing hand, the Salem men bought between 2300 and 2400 baits since Monday. Probably no one was more surprised at the sudden demand than the buyers them elves. They had looked upon the season as practically closed, when all t once order, from the East began to pour In. These or ders were doubtless the result of tha sta- tlstlcs regarding the remaining supply for warded to the.. Eastern trade last week. Of the Salem men who participated in the buying movement. II. J. Ottenhelraer headed the list with about 1000 bales to his credit. These purchases are believed by local hop men to have been made for Charles Werner. Charles Llvesley, representative of the e! Clemens Horst Company, bought between TOO and S00 bates and Catlin & Linn se cured about 600 bales. Nearly all the purchases made during the week were at 9 and OH cents, in addition to the Mies printed yesterday morning. H h been learned that Catlin & Linn secured the Thlelion lot of 113 baits and the Kep ringer lot of 100 bales, both at Gervale. and OtUnhelmer the Henrlot lot of about ISO bales at Cowlltx. all at 0 cents. One interesting deal was the purchase by Lives ley of Hlrschberg-s 1904s, 350 bales of them, at 6 cents. This last lot ha figured In more or less litigation and Its transfer al most cleanr up the state of olds. The supply of 1005s. by the big movement this week, has dwindled to very small pro portions. James Linn and Henry Otten belmer went over their lists or growers holdings yesterday morning and found that between S500 and 4000 bales w.re left in first bands. Just about enough to last an other w.ek at the rate they hare been going. ANOTHER DROP IN BUTTER MONDAX. Top-Price Handlers Expect to MsdaUta Tal aes Today. It Is the btlier in the local buttsr trade that the 36-cent quotation cannot b held up after this week. Several of the city cream eries are already down to 22 cents and all but on. r the Front-strest commission bouses art quoting that price or lower. The i surplus Is growing and a decline that will have affected all handlers Is looked for M su dsy. Speculators arc tigusfng en the bottom of the market being reached at as early date. Eggs hold steady at 16 cents with the rap- ply and demand both good. The poultry market shows so change. Hens ere in small demand, aad weak, but Springs sell readily at good prices. Geese are in fair demand and ducks are Quoted firm, as are fat dressed hen turkeys. BARK OF GREEN TRUCK. Practically No Vegetables Offertec Front Street. Front street is practically bare ot green vegetables of every kind. A car of cabbage and cauliflower Is due today and this is the only relief expected before the aext tea-aer arrives. One car of oranges arrived yesterday and the coming week will bring In four or five .more, not near enough to supply the de mand, even at the high prices now ruling. Two cars of bananas reached the yards last night and will be hauled this morning. The Inquiry for bananas Is exceedingly strong, as they are the cheapest fruit offering at the present time. Mty oa call lent at 31 per ctm oa the Stock Exchange, thux keeping up the tendency cf a progreMlve rise In the maxlsssi asoney rate for each day of this week. The excess over yesterday's 30 per cent rale, however, as Is sees, was oaly aomlnaj. The severest airlareaer of the day was over before the period at which the Surry had oc curred. In previous Gal's ot the week. This was due In large part to the fact that neces sitous borrow eii were prompt to supply their needs rather than wait until late la the day la fear that rates by that Use would be higher than yesterday and the supply ot available funds reduced to-aarrow proportions. The late Carries heretofore .have been lantely due to this data of borrowers, -and the Qual ity of their collateral has also played aa Im portant part. The forehasdedssss oc borrow ers today covered the requirements, while there was stln plenty of time to make ar rangements. The cosiequeace was a tbarp reiapee In rates late la the day, wbea bor rowers' seeds were supplied and a reausant of funds left os hand unplaced. Slocks came more freely upea the s&arktl early today than at aay Use this week, the early flight la the call-loan rate causlag appre henloa of still severer coedltloos before the dose But the market made a atrocx recov ery when the local loan rate ran oS. The compilations of the week's currency roor truest published Curiae the afternoon, of fered ample explanation of the course of the mosey market during the week. The Snb- treatury has abeorbed $5,190,000. The est! mates of the movement to the Interior by ex press oa balance differ widely, making tbe'es titrates of the aet loss of cash vary all the way from $7,009,000 to considerably over 110. 000.000. As the surplus reserve of the banks last week stood at only a little over X3.000.000, It la clear that the maintenance of their In tegnly depends oa the extent to which the deposit liabilities hare beea reduced by the scaling dowa of loans. Publlfhrd estimate of the condition oa April 1 of the Winter wheat crop, showing x highly favorable situation, were a belpfct la fluence. The demand for stocks following the running oS la the mosey rate was attributed largely to professional short account, but ear lier losses were generally recovered, and number of 1-polnt gains established.
