You've read the gist of the story printed above. There's not much more to tell. Except this slight detail as to the present condition of the Shoos and their value. Our shoe buyer, Mr. Jameson. gae Messrs. Leonard & Barrows, of Middluboro. Mass.. an order for a large number of cases of fine Shoes for men's wear some time In Juno last. Thls Arm is noted as makers of quality footwear. The Instructions were, when the order was given, that the Shoes were to equal any 55-quality they ever turned out. but It was our private under standing that we would sell them upon their ar rival for 54-00. in order to make positively sure of having tho best Snoe value for men in Port land. They were shipped Just in time to take a train that was foreordained to be wrecked, and was. as stated above, on its way to this Coast, just oast of Omaha, Neb. Some of the cases con taining the Shoes were badly smashed, and tho cartons broken. NOT A PAIR OF THE SHOES IS IN THE LEAST DAMAGED, NOT EVEN TO THE EXTENT OF A SCRATCH. There were a few that were slightly wet. but NONE OF THESE WILL ENTER THE SALE. Wo positively guar antee every pair of the Shoes in this great offer ing to bf absolutely perfect as the day they left the factory in Mlddl.boro. But on account of tne delay and general bad condition of the cases con taining the Shoes, the railroad company made us a very generous settlement, which allows of our selling the Shoes at a price ridiculously low. The sale starts today at A. M., and will be posi tively the GREATEST SALE OF MEN'S FINE SHOES EVER ATTEMPTED IN PORTLAND. Ev ery detail has been carefully planned to this end. Among tha Shoes are the following: Men's Gun-Metal Calf Bluchers, with Englls.i walking last: very smurt style: the popular thing with good Vressers In the East Those hnve double soles and are made especially for our Ore gon climatic conditions. Mens Patent Calf Blucher; a semi-dross style; very handsome; has kangaroo top, single sole and Is made on the new "Pota" last. One of the sea son's favorites; very fashionable, yet not sacrl llring -comfort for the style It embraces. Men's Dark inter Tans, In storm style, of Eng lish oil grain leather and made In Blucher style. Bellus tongue and two soles to heel. Men's Black Bluchers, of box calf stock, water and wear-proof linings and double soles. Made on the English walking last. Every Shoe in the en tire lot has oak-tanned soles, as near water-proof as leather can be made by modern process under expert handling. Bear in mind this is not a lot of Shoes picked up at random just to get a price, but every pair made fcr Olds, Wortman & King by special order and tinder instructions of our own skilled aad expert shopman. Mr. Jameson, who has spent a lifetime in the Shoe business in Eastern cities, and whose reputation as a Shoe expert stands second to none in the United Statos whl-h means the world when Shoes are con sidered. A branch of that faithful band exists in Portland, and is known here, as elsewhere, as the "Consumers' League." Thus body of humanitarian women has requested many of the larger, leading retail establishments of" the country to send out circulars asking you to buy Christmas goods early and thereby lessen the strain of the last two pre-Christmas weeks. "Wc'v.p done more than these thoughtful women ask, for in this way we talk thro' the daily press to fully 200,000 people every day who arc real shoppers and more which re minds us of a story we told once before about a year ago in these columns: but it's good, and illustrates the point. Ilughey Dougherty, an old-time minstrel, said he never liked the inscription on a certain fountain that occupied a prominent space in a public square of a big Eastern cy. It was this: ""Water, that wc may drink." It should read, he said, "Water that we CAN driuk.', And by this same token wc not only say you may buy Christmas gifts early now but in every section of this great store we've everything in Holiday readiness, so that you CAN buy.
