V THREE PARTIES FORMED lodificd Crinoline Displayed With jits Hidden Mechanism, but Is Declared Object of Uni versal Mirth. CHICAGO. Sept. 20. (Special.) Tho bat tle of the hoopskirt, or crinoline or no crinoline, was fought to a finish In the Nailanal Dressmakers' Convention this afternoon and both sides are claiming a vk-tery. More than COO modistes from the Middle Wost witnessed the contest, which ragod among Mme. Baker, president of the association, who strongly opposed fcwfcps in any form; Mme. Hosac, of Chi cago, who advocated a three-rlm crino line, and Mrs. Belle Armstrong. o New Yark. who took a position midway be tween the two extremes. "I've got on a hoopskirt now," said Mrs. Whitney. "Would you believe it?" and she pirouetted acress the stage with a tremendous rustling. "I could climb a fence or a telegraph pole with it," she continued, and the modistes all agreed that she looked ns it she could do that very thing. Reveals the Mechanism. With some ruffling of skirts and a few glances to make sure no horrid men were cancoaled in the convention hall, Mrs. Whitney revealed the hidden mechanism of the hoopskirt. Bon'eath the foundation Hktrt of blue satin was what appeared to be -a petticoat with a skeleton top. It was like any other petticoat, but above It were only three bone hoops connected 'wttfc. ribbons, after tho manner oT the steel framework of a skyscraper. "The secret of the whole thing," said Mrs. Whitney, "Is that the hoops do not ga entirely around the body. In front thra is a panel of cloth, which prevents de hoops from sticking out, as they did' Jo the days of our ancestors." Virtues of the Hoop Skirt. .gafn thore was a rustling of skirts, tmd the panel was revealed for a fleeting neHtodt. "The modified crinoline," continued Mrs. Whitney, "saves money because It pro 4tKos an effect that would otherwise re tJre 17 yards of cloth. It preserves the linos, giving all the time the slight flare needed this season. It keeps the dress ahead of the feet, permitting one's feet in glide in and out like mice instead of Mke hams. Finally. It is a wondorful help wihen a woman Is going around windy owners." Object of Mirth to All. Do Mston to her wiles," shouted Mme. Hiker. "I am unalterably opposed to Hls in any form. Just Imagine your self sitting down In street-cars, the ob ject of mirth of all -men and sensible wmn. The American people have long nee outgrown the balloon skirts, and we mast .not let them be introduced again." t Hoop Skirt "Will Come Back. Notwithstanding the objections of the Baker faction, however. It Is .safe to say ltae hoopskirts are to come back, modified, it is true, but eventually the extreme. The fact that the balloon effect may be pro duced without buying an entire bolt of cteth appeals to many women, and the thousands who do not possess admirable figures welcome the full garments, which Wde bony angles and other defects. It is fair to predict that the women next reason wHl be walking around in minia ture steel cages, modeled very much after these of antebellum days,. But here, today, -we hold our second informal presentation of the newest in Autumn merchandise and the latest in Fall modes and fashions. Full season shows in Millinery, Suits, Wraps, Gowns, Furs and Waists, Silks and Dress Fabrics, Races and Embroideries, Underwear and Hosiery, Neckwear, Gloves, Shoes, Men's Out fittings; in short, everything for household use or personal wear of Women, Misses and Chil dren, and Furnishings for the sterner sex. Today's events will be so really impor tant in the Fashion World bounded by tho store's shopping limits that every woman ill Portland should enter the date in her en gagement books, and folk from out of town should plan to come to the store. It is no longer an open question people have come to absolutely KNOW that the OLDS, WORTMAN & KING STORE SETS THE STYLES for the PACIFIC SLOPE. That's provable in many ways by the extent and elegance of our importations; by the high class, genteel tone of the vast stocks shown; by the evidence of your own trained eyes. Tourists know that few stores in the East ern States show such stocks or give an equal service. Not a store in all America located in a citv TWICE THE SIZE OF PORT LAND 'SHOWS STOCKS EQUAL TO OURS. And Portland people appreciate their BEST and FOREMOST STORE. Few stores with the convenience and SAFETY one meets with at this store; one shops with more safety and with greater satis faction in Portland's stores than in either the shops of New York or Paris. If you go to London you'll find stupendous solid ity combined with a heavy feeling of som berness connected with shopping amid the surroundings of the better metropolitan stores; and should you not buy you'd be asked, "What you came in for?" And you'd sure not like London styles, in the majority of things. In connection with this, elaborate but informal display of the new and beautiful, a lavish lot of matchless bargains has been arranged in every sec tion of the store.
