GRANT'S PASS. Or., Sept. i. (Spocial.)
Or. Jataee WlOiycombo, dirootor of the
SUU Agricultural Golloge, has arranged
to hoM five farmer-?' Institutes during this

The Itinerary has been so arranged that
Dr. Withyoombe and the other members
of the college station staff, who will be
with him, to have a full day in Jackson
Cowtty and a full day in Josephine
County to enable them to make a thor
ough examination of the various soils,
crops and methods of cultivation that are
to be found in the farming districts of
this valley. Dr. "Wlthycombo and party
will arrive in Grant's Pass the day previ
ous to holding the institute in this city
and tbey will be the guests of the busl
noss men and will be taken for a drive
In the farming districts about the city.
The speakers of this institute will be
Dr. James Withycombe, who will take up
irrigation, dry-land farming and soiling;
professor F. L.. Kent, who will have
dairying, grasses and cows; Professor A.
B. Cordley, fungus and insect pests of the

It was planned to have Colonel R. C.
Judson. of the O. R. & X. Co.'s experi
mental farm bureau, address the insti
tutes on the methods of dry-land culti
vation that he has introduced to the
farmers of Eastern Oregon, and which
have enabled them to grow crops on
land before considered too dry for farm
purposos. Owing to a severe attack ot
rhoumallsm Colonol Judson will be un
able to take part in the programme of
No section of the. "West stands more in
need of instruction in the new methods
of dry-land cultivation than does South
ern Oregon. This section is In the seml
tirid belt and while crops can be grown
by slipshod methods and by the methods
in vogue in wet sections of the country,
yet the productive capacity of Rogue
Rlvor Valley could be doubled If but all
the farmers hero would drop the methods
they used m the States and take up the
new way of planting and cultivating that
has proven so successful in other semi
arld districts of the WesL This topic of
dry-land cultivation will be made ono of
thp leading features of the farmers' insti
tutes that Dr. Withycombe will conduct
in Southern Oregon.
Reports from various sections of Jose
phine and Jackson indicate that these in
stitutes will be well attended, for both
the farmers and the business men are
taking an active Interest In promoting
them that they may bring a betterment to
the agricultural Interests of this section of
