THE MORNIIfCr OKEGONIAN, TUESDAY, AUGUST 29, 1905. lNHY WILSON FELL Borrowed Money From Kribs and Did Not Repay. HIS SECRET SERVICE WAYS Iind Office Did Xot Uike His Plac ing Himself Under Obligations to Big Timbernicn. He Was Investigating. OREGONIAX NEWS BUREAU, Wash ington, Afcg. 2S. Intimacy with Fred erick A. Kribs, the Oregon land operator, who was "good to Senator Mitchell," has cost Special Agent George F. Wilson his Job In the general land office. Wilson has beon on duty -in Oregon for some time and, while there, formed the ac quaintance of Kribs. The two became qulto friendly and in time Wilson bor rowed 5260 from the land operator for seme object unknown. Kribs had con fidence that Wilson would return the money, but in this he appears to have been mistaken, for, although the- loan was made many months ago, Wilson has not as yet, so far as the department can learn, returned the $250. Fearing his money was gone, Kribs complained to the department and an investigation was made which satisfied the land office that Wilson had borrowed the money and had not returned It. His dismissal, however, is not made on account of his failure to return Kribs' $250, but because he placed himself on Intimate terms with a man wljose oper ations he was expected to investigate and the man with whom, above all others, he should enter into no entangling alliances and to whom he should not become obliged. Asked why he had made this loan, Wil son replied that It was his method of do ing good secret service work. He be lieved if he could get big timber men "on Intimate terms with them, he could better serve the government than if he was unknown or distant. The department failed to see things in this light, especially as Wilson had made another big loan back in South Dakota, which he likewise failed to repay, so his sorvlces were discontinued. Wilson was a Rhode Island man. About the time the complaint was made against him by Kribs, he was transferred to New Mexico. The department has no concern over Kribs' money; he must take his own means to recover from Wilson. ALBERS RESISTED THE LAW Merry Tells Cause of American's Arrest In Nicaragua. WASHINGTON. Aug. 2S. A cablegram received at the State Department from Minister Merry, dated at San Jose, Costa Rica, today, says that Albers, the Amer ican citizen arrested in Nicaragua, Is In comfortable quarters, and is allowed to receive his friends In Jail. He has also been permitted to visit his own house twice and has retained two lawyers, who may consult with him. Mr. Merry adds that he will see that Albers has a fair trial. A mail report received today from Mr. Merry, dated at San oJse, August 18, gives the information called for by the State Department as to the cause of the arrest of Albers. It appears from Mr. Merry's report that only one man of that name was involved In the trouble. The Minlstor Inclosed a copy of a telegram received by him from the Nicaraguan Minister for Foreign Affairs, dated at Managua, August 13. In this dispatch the Minister for Foreign Affairs stated that William C. Albers resided in Jalapa, in the "District of New Sebogia, and that he opposed the local authorities In their attempt to servo a- writ. In his excite ment. Albers, it Is charged, insulted the Prosident of the republic The author ities of Jalapa began a civil suit against him, and the course of the proceedings caused his removal to the headquarters f the district, where Albers will be tried. Building of Great Station. NEW YORK. Aug, 28. At the pres ent rate of progress in the work of improvement, it is expected that three months will see the Grand Central sta tion razed and work begun on the mag nificent structure which Is to replace the 5nly railway terminal at present existing an Manhattan Island. Only the non-com-plotlon of the temporary offices for the railroad company prevents the work of tearing down the old structure at "once. Work on the Improvements has gone as tar as it can without entering the sta tion or causing an Interruption of the train service. Where two years ago stood several hundred homes In the section be tide the tracks between Forty-fourth and Forty-ninth streets, today Is an excava tion quite extensive in itself, but only a traction of the great hole that will be made in the nineteen square blocks which the torminal will cover. The plans of the railroad company call for an expenditure 5 $25,000,000 on the Improvements. Large Dock at Aberdeen. ABERDEEN, Wash., Aug. 28. (Spe Sial.)
